Apparatus and method are provided for receiving a flow of packages such as parcels or bundles, dividing it into plural streams for easier singulation, singulating each such stream, and delivering the produced packages one at a time to a user, each stream being provided to a different user. Downstream sensors are used to control a deflector which in turn divides a received flow of packages into multiple such flows and apportions the received packages among the two output flows. Singulation of each such output flow is accomplished by a plurality of inclined belts which each moves a received package upward and over its peak to drop for entry into the next stage downstream, thereby singulating the received flow in stages. These belt stages are individually controlled by further downstream sensors and motors which prevent movement of upstream such belt(s) if one or more packages, indicating a flow blockage, is sensed downstream. The output of the singulator is provided to a slide that has a series of motor-controlled detents to deliver packages to the downstream user one at a time.

A conveyor system incorporating conveyors operating in conjunction for conveying, arranging, positioning and placing boards for feeding boards in an end to end arrangement to a processing station. The system includes a descrambler for feeding boards sequentially in a crosswise orientation onto a lug type conveyor. The lugs of the lug type conveyor conveys the boards through a scanner where the boards are scanned and the data input to a computer. A speed up conveyor cooperates with the lug conveyor to advance the board against a preceding lug of the lug conveyor which restrains the board. A board turner is provided to turn the board over if required. The speed up conveyor conveys the board onto a positioning conveyor and advances the board against a lug which retains the board in a determined position. Positioning pins advance the board onto a longitudinal conveyor which conveys the boards along their longitudinal length. The conveyors are cooperatively arranged to minimize the spacing between boards placed on the longitudinal conveyor.

The problem of unevenness of bottle temperatures at the entry of slow annealing furnace due to the variation of time periods necessary for respective bottles discharged from an IS bottle manufacturing machine to reach the annealing furnace has been solved by an equalization of the time periods. For this purpose, the bottle discharging order from the IS bottle manufacturing machine is controlled and use is made of two conveyors having different running speeds and/or direction of running. As a result, a precise temperature control in the Hot-End-Coating apparatus provided upstream from the annealing furnace can be carried out owing to the equalized temperatures of bottles entering into the annealing furnace.

A first conveyor is adjoined downstream, as viewed in a predetermined conveying direction for an imbricated product stream, by a gap-forming device. A gap is formed in the imbricated product stream by means of the gap-forming device which feeds the imbricated product stream to a second conveyor. The gap-forming device comprises a belt conveyor provided with two laterally spaced transport belts, as well as an accelerating conveyor arranged between the two transport belts. A conveyor belt of the accelerating conveyor comprises passages which are distributed over approximately one half of its length. At the region of the conveying-active path of the conveyor belt, the passages are in connection with a suction trough. In order to form a gap in the imbricated product stream, the conveyor belt is driven at a higher speed than the belt conveyor, and the suction trough is connected to a negative pressure source. As a result, the products lying on the accelerating conveyor at the beginning of gap formation are sucked onto the conveyor belt and accelerated by the latter, while the following or trailing products are further conveyed at a lower speed by means of the belt conveyor.

An apparatus and method for collecting flexible bagged product into groups having desired spacing characteristics and for packing such product groups in receptacles is disclosed. In a first embodiment, the apparatus of the present invention includes an infeed belt for transporting product, a collecting belt operatively aligned with the infeed belt for collecting product from the infeed in product groups, product detecting apparatus for detecting units of product passing from the infeed belt to the collecting belt, means for transporting the product groups from the collecting belt to receptacles, and a controller operatively connected to the detecting apparatus and the collecting belt for advancing the collecting belt a preselected distance for each product which passes onto the collecting belt until a group containing the preselected number of product is collected on the collecting belt, and for activating the collecting belt to advance the collected product gorups to a transporting station. In a second embodiment of the present invention, product groups having the desired characteristics (i.e. number and time separation) are collected by varying the speed of the collecting belt, as opposed to the "stop/start" operation of the first embodiment. A third embodiment of the present invention combines selected components of the first and second embodiments and comprises a variable speed spacing belt operatively aligned with an infeed belt for creating a preselected time separation between product groups, and a collecting belt operatively aligned with the spacing belt for collecting product from the spacing belt in product groups. In a preferred embodiment, the transporting apparatus of the present invention comprises an oscillating conveyor for selectively depositing product groups into receptacles for shipping and handling.
