摘要: A controlled member is movable between two end positions defined by respective first and second stops, particularly a flap-type valve member located in the exhaust gas conduit of an internal combustion engine movable between first and second end positions in which the valve member comes into abutment with respective first and second seating surfaces of the conduit. An arrangement for positioning the controlled member includes a drive motor having a motor shaft, a worm screw connected to and driven by the motor shaft, a worm gear meshing with and driven by the worm screw, a positioning-arrangement output shaft coupled to and driving the controlled member, a claw coupling having a first part coupled to and driving the output shaft and a second part coupled to and driven by the worm gear, a unit automatically operative for turning off the drive motor when the controlled member is moved into one of the end positions thereof, and a damping spring arrangement intermediate the two parts of the claw coupling and operative upon drive motor turn-off for absorbing the kinetic energy present in the moving parts of the positioning arrangement to effect braking of such moving parts and so dimensioned as not to be deformed during such absorbing beyond a predetermined maximum permissible extent.

摘要: An exhaust gas purification apparatus for a vehicle in which exhaust gases from an internal combustion engines are subject to a catalytic reaction in a reducing catalyst bed and an oxidizing catalyst bed to remove nitrogen oxides and combustible constituents in the engine exhaust gases. In the device, the reducing catalyst bed and oxidizing catalyst bed are disposed in series in the flowing direction of exhaust gases within a cylindrical casing mounted integrally to a joining portion of exhaust manifold, and secondary air supplying means is provided when the exhaust gas temperature at a point downstream of the catalyst beds is lower than a predetermined setting. A passage for connecting the joining portion of the exhaust manifold directly with an exhaust pipe is provided, and a valve means is disposed in this passage to be opened to pass the exhaust gases through this passage when the exhaust gas temperature detected by a temperature detector mounted to the exhaust pipe is higher than the predetermined setting.

摘要: A catalytic converter, and method of assembling same, adapted for use in the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines comprises a housing including as a part thereof a tubular shell having a differentially hardened, annular fibrous lining to resiliently support, insulate, and secure a monolithic type catalyst element. The ends of the tubular shell extend beyond the fibrous lining, which in turn extends beyond the upstream and downstream ends of the catalyst element. The ends of the shell and the ends of the fibrous lining are angularly deformed inwardly to protect the corners of the catalyst, to minimize gas impingement on the fibrous material, and to mechanically retain the catalyst in position. The method includes the steps of inserting the monolithic catalyst into the shell with the annular resilient lining in place around the periphery of the catalyst, bending the ends of both the shell and liner over the ends of the catalyst and subsequently attaching inlet and outlet conduits to the ends of the shell.

摘要: To supervise operational effectiveness of catalytic reactors included in exhaust emission detoxification systems, an oxygen sensor is located downstream of the reactor to determine oxygen content in the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine, the oxygen sensor comprising an ion conductive solid electrolyte forming an ion concentration chain and having catalytically inactive contacts, connected to a detection circuit which provides an output signal in dependence on a signal from the sensor, the output signal operating an alarm, or a transducer which interferes with proper engine operation to force the operator to have the reactor repaired. Preferably, two ion conductive chains are used, in a single sensor, or in two sensors, one being exposed to exhaust gases upstream of the catalytic reactor and the other downstream of the catalytic reactor, the output signals being provided to a differentially connected operational amplifier, to balance out extraneous influences.

摘要: A catalytic muffler is described with reference to three preferred embodiments. In the first embodiment, a cylindrical entry tube having peripheral holes passes into the interior of the muffler, a second cylindrical tube having peripheral holes offset from the peripheral holes in the entry tube surrounds the entry tube, a cartridge containing a catalytic converter surrounds the second tube, and an exit tube leads from a point in the interior of the muffler external to the cartridge to the exterior of the muffler. In the second embodiment, the entry tube is branched within the muffler, and each branch is surrounded by a cartridge containing a catalytic converter. In the third embodiment, the entry tube, the second tube, and the cartridge all have cross-sections in the shapes of racetracks the major and minor axes of which are coincident. In all three embodiments, the cartridge is filled with asbestos fibers impregnated first with sodium and then with copper sulfate.

摘要: A compact cylindrical-form or ball-shaped exhaust gas converter is provided with a hemispherical-form inlet end housing section to provide a gas expansion space around a perforated interior partition which, in turn, is maintained a spaced distance from such housing section to extend from the gas inlet port to a zone adjacent the upstream end of the centrally positioned catalyst retaining section. This special gas inlet construction serves as a gas pressure amplitude modulator to average or dampen pulsations in the exhaust gas stream from an internal combustion engine so as to substantially eliminate damage to the catalyst being maintained in the converter.

摘要: A catalytic converter comprises an annular monolithic catalyst element in a cylindrical can having one closed axial end and a central inlet opening and peripheral outlet openings at the other axial end. The catalyst element has an inner cylindrical surface defining a central axial opening therethrough aligned with the inlet opening. A conduit extends from the inlet opening through the central axial opening of the catalyst element to conduct exhaust gases from the inlet opening to the closed end of the casing for return flow through the catalyst element to the outlet openings. The portion of the exhaust conduit within the central opening of the catalyst element is cylindrical and is spaced slightly away from the inner surface of the catalyst element to define an annular space therebetween, the annular space being so thin as to force exhaust gases leaking therethrough into contact with the inner surface of the catalyst element.

摘要: In an internal combustion engine exhaust system, a catalytic converter mounted on the exhaust manifold has a cylindrical catalyst bed which is disposed on a substantially vertical axis. The exhaust gases flow downwardly into and through a louvered inner tube and then radially through the bed. A frusto-conical baffle is supported from the inner tube and extends outwardly and downwardly into the bed to separate an upper catalyst reservoir portion of the bed from a lower gas flow portion of the bed. During thermal expansion of the bed or upon attrition of the catalyst in the gas flow portion, catalyst beads are discharged from the reservoir portion around the conical baffle and into the gas flow portion.

The baffle element is movably mounted within the inlet channel so as to permit the exhaust gas to flow essentially unimpeded toward the center of the catalyst when the catalyst temperature is below a predetermined value and to deflect the exhaust gas away from the center of the catalyst to cause uniform flow thereof to the catalyst when the catalyst temperature is above said predetermined value.
