A one-piece disposable syringe system is disclosed including a conventional syringe having a glass barrel that is prefilled with a measured dose of pharmaceutical and a syringe support and disposal jacket that is adapted to hold the syringe in an injection mode to facilitate the administration of an injection of the pharmaceutical from the barrel and surround the syringe in a disposal mode to form a compact package and thereby facilitate the safe handling and disposal of the syringe while avoiding an accidental needle stick and the possible spread of contagious disease. The syringe support and disposal jacket has lower and upper body members that are rotatably connected together by an integral living hinge. The syringe is coupled to the support and disposal jacket and rotatable from a first position in the injection mode where the upper and lower body members are spaced from one another to a second position in the disposal mode where the lower and upper body members are moved atop one another and locked together with the syringe shielded therebetween.

A compact, single-use stylus applicator is disclosed having a dry medication (e.g. a dehydrated topical astringent disinfectant that is adapted to treat acne and has been reduced to crystalline form by lyophilization) stored in a first chamber. A liquid diluent is stored in a second chamber. Fluid communication between the first and second chambers is blocked by a barrier. By compressing the second chamber, a corresponding hydraulic pressure is generated in the diluent which defeats the fluid blocking integrity of the barrier. Accordingly, the diluent in the second chamber is introduced under pressure to the dry medication in the first chamber to rehydrate and activate the acne medication. The reconstituted multi-constituent liquid medication is absorbed by a stylus-shaped swab so as to be applied directly to a tissue area as a topical treatment for acne or other skin disorders.

The rope then continues through a friction pulley configuration driven by a variable speed gear motor, and then upwardly through the davit-like housing to again travel through the open space. The speed of the motor can be controlled in a feed-forward manner where the user sets the speed, as in one training configuration where the speed of the rope is to be exceeded by the climber, or where the progress of the climber movement may be determined by sensors which determine how close to a pre-determined height the climber has progressed.

A reciprocating drive assembly includes drive stems (36c) extending from the pistons (46b) of each cartridge, a limit guide (76c) removably mounted to the housing, and a sliding body (66e, 300) mounted to the housing through the limit guide. Two one-way drivers (326) and threaded dosage adjusters (60c) are carried by the sliding body. Each one-way driver drives the drive stem into the cartridge through a drive surface to provide a range of dose selections. The user can thus control the amount and proportion of each pharmaceutical dispensed during each delivery stroke for each dispensing cycle. The housing is separable from the remainder of the dispenser, preferably using a cartridge release assembly (302), to allow spent cartridge to be replaced. Use of the cartridge release assembly also causes the one-way drivers to release the drive stems to permit the drive stems to be returned to their original positions.

The set of enclosure units are connected to one another by frangible connections (64, 66; 130, 138). The cartridge-needle unit has a hollow barrel (14) with a needle assembly (24) mounted to one end and a piston (16) mounted therein. Each enclosure unit includes a body section (38, 106), a stem section (44, 108) frangibly connected to one end of the body section, and an end cap (52, 110) connected to the other end of the body section. The frangible connection (48, 118) is broken to remove the stem section to expose the needle (26) for use. The removed stem section is used to drive the piston within the barrel. After use, the barrel is pulled back through the body section so that the needle is completely housed within the body section. At that point radially inwardly extending spring fingers (84, 132) engage a shoulder (76) on the hub (34) of the needle assembly to keep the needle assembly from being withdrawn from the body section to permit a safe disposal of the used syringe. The syringe set needs no special packaging and no holders for the cartridge-needle units, the enclosure units serving as both.

The cartridge housing is installed within a cartridge cover having an outwardly extending pitched land. An outer sleeve having a matching pitched groove formed on the inner surface thereof is received about the cartridge cover. The cover is rotationally mounted to a base member. By translating the outer sleeve away from the base member, the cartridge cover and cartridge housing are rotated to provide turbulent mixing action for any liquid within the cartridge housing. In an alternate embodiment, the cartridge cover is omitted and the pitched land is provided directly on the outer surface of the cartridge housing.
