A continuous procedure for obtaining panels clad on at least two adjacent sides from a continuous band, including the steps of gluing cladding along a first face of the bands, holding the cladding in position until final gluing, gradually folding down the cladding along the side or sides of the band, gluing down the flaps and holding the cladding in position until final gluing. The invention applies to obtaining edged insulating panels.

A rotatably supported annular tire bead is rotated by drive rollers held in contact with the inner circumferential surface of the bead, and during rotation of the bead a tape is fed and stuck onto the inner circumferential surface of the bead. The opposite side edge portions of this tape extending from this bead are stuck onto the opposite side surfaces of the bead by being pinched from the opposite sides by flange portions of the drive rollers and flange members opposed thereto, subsequently the opposite side edge portions of the tape are folded back onto the outer circumferential surface of the bead by means of scraper members, and thus the bead is perfectly covered by the tape. The above-mentioned flange members are fitted around the drive rollers so as to be slidable in the axial direction, and they are biased to reduce the intervals between the flange members and the flange portions of the drive rollers. Furthermore, there is provided expanding means for expanding the above-mentioned intervals.

The invention disclosed relates to a method of making laminated products such as furniture, cabinets, counters, and the like. A laminate formed of thermosetting polyester saturated on paper of 8-12 mil thickness is bonded with a thermoplastic, thermoforming acrylic saturated on paper of 12-18 mil thickness. The bonded layers are shaped over at least two surfaces angularly positioned relative to each other. For examples, the bonded layers are shaped around sharp corners or edges of a substrate, such as conventional fiberboard, particle board or wood, under heat and pressure. A hot melt adhesive, preferably coated on the inner surface of the bonded laminate attaches the laminate to the one plane surface of the substrate and bending pressure is applied as the substrate and laminate pass through a series of rollers to bend the laminate in degrees around the corners and into contact with the other surface of the substrate. Pressures are in the 20-200 psi range and at temperature in the range of 350.degree.-450.degree. F. A superior product having a contiguous surface laminate on the substrate provides an element or elements for the manufactured article possessing heat and mar resistance. spThis application is a divisional application of a copending prior application Ser. A system is disclosed for laminating surfacing materials, such as high and low pressure laminates, paper, wood veneers, metal foils and the like, to core material, such as plywood, particle board, flake board, hard board, rigid plastic foams and the like.The disclosure includes a machine for laminating, particularly utilizing high viscosity, hot melt adhesives within the ambient conditions of a factory. A sandwich is formed at ambient temperature with the adhesive between the laminate and core either as sheet material or precoated on the laminate or the core. The method employs a progressive heating of the adhesive and adjacent parts of the sandwich from ambient temperature through tackiness to an activating temperature followed immediately by a physical migration of the adhesive to wet out adjacent surfaces followed by a cooling of the sandwich to a mechanical bonding adhesive temperature. The machine is particularly useful in non-toxic, non-ventilated installations for laminating wherein it is desired to avoid solvent handling as well as the difficulties of melting and applying hot melt adhesives and controlling the necessary conditions thereof.

A plastic laminating apparatus for laminating plastic sheet material to a countertop core having a backsplash attached at right angles thereto during a single pass through the apparatus. The apparatus consists of a plurality of longitudinally spaced work stations through which the work is successively moved for progressively shaping and adhering the plastic laminate to the work, such work being guided through the apparatus by receipt of a downwardly projecting portion from the work in a guide track extending the entire length of the apparatus. A back die bends the laminate to conform to the general shape of the backsplash and countertop after heating, and fingers and pressure rolls are used to progressively bend and press the projecting edges of the laminate into firm contact with the edges of the countertop and backsplash. Floating cutters are also used to trim the excess laminate material extending beyond the countertop and backsplash edges, and such excess material may be picked up by a suction blower or removed by a rotary brush prior to passage through final pressure rolls.

THE CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION OF COMPOSITE STRUCTURAL PANELS EMBODYING A CONTINUOUS CORE OF CELLULAR ORGANIC OR MINERAL MATERIAL, COVERED ON ONE OR MORE FACES AND EDGES THEREOF WITH A SHEET OF HEAT-HARDENABLE RESINOUS MATERIAL, PREFERABLY REENFORCED WITH MINERAL FIBROUS MATERIAL, WHICH IS PREGELIFIED BEFORE ITS APPLICATION TO THE CORE, AND WHICH IS SUBSEQUENTLY JOINED TO THE LATTER BY PRESSING THEM TOGETHER WHILE THE RESINOUS MATERIAL UNDERGOES FINAL POLYMERIZATION AND HARDENING, PREPARATORY TO THE CONTROLLED COOLING THEREOF AND CUTTING INTO PANELS OF DESIRED LENGTH. MANY IMPROVEMENTS IN THE COMPOSITE PANEL AND IN THE MODE OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF ARE ATTAINED BY INTERPOSING AN INTERMEDIATE LAYER OF FLEXIBLE MATERIAL, SUCH AS A FOAM RESIN, BETWEEN THE CORE AND THE FACING LAYERS OF THE PANEL.
