The grooves 4 absorb or moderate warping stress exerted on the supporting plate 3 due to difference in the thermal expansion coefficients of the slider 2 and the supporting plate 3 to prevent warping deformation of the supporting plate 3, thus preventing distortion of the slider 2. This allows maintenance of the flatness of the top surface 2a of the slider 2, prevention of spacing loss, and recording and reproduction with a high degree of reliability.

A preliminary track is defined by preliminary width-defining grooves such that the preliminary track extends across the magnetic gap in the direction of extension of the air bearing, each groove having a depth larger than the depth of the magnetic gap. An effective track is defined by a pair of opposed final width-defining recesses formed adjacent to the magnetic gap such that the effective track extends across the magnetic gap in the direction of extension of the air bearing. The length and width of the effective track are smaller than those of the preliminary track, and the width of the effective track determines the nominal width of the magnetic gap. Each recess has a depth smaller than that of the preliminary width-defining grooves but larger than that of the magnetic gap. Also disclosed is a process of fabricating the head core slider.

An interactive system for lapping transducers has an abrasive surface that communicates with the transducers in order to provide information for controlling the lapping and testing the transducers. The lapping body is preferably shaped as a disk, drum or tape, and communicates with the transducer with a type of signal that the transducer is designed to read and/or write. Thus for lapping a magnetic head or slider to be employed in a hard disk drive, the lapping body contains a magnetic medium layer that is either prerecorded or written by the head during lapping, while the signal received by the head is monitored and analyzed by a processor in order to determine, in part, when to terminate lapping. A series of transducers can be simultaneously lapped while individually monitored, so that each transducer can be removed from the lapping body individually upon receipt of a signal indicating that transducer has been lapped an optimal amount. Transducers for employment in drive systems can also be tested for performance characteristics by utilizing lapping bodies having surface characteristics similar to those found in the drive system.

The vertical inductive transducer is suitable for vertical recording applications. The transducer vertical magnetic pole tip and magnetic yoke structure are formed at one end of the suspension member with the vertical pole tip extending to and exposed at an air bearing surface formed on the lower surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member. The integral transducer/suspension assembly can be adapted for either flying above the recording media or for use in continuous contact with the recording media. The air bearing surface is formed on the lower surface of a wear pad. The fabrication of the transducer/suspension assembly is adapted to be performed at the wafer level.

A method of constructing a ferrite magnetic head that can be used for vertical recording. The head is created by first bonding a non-magnetic shoe to the legs of a C-Shaped magnetic core to create a block assembly. A pole surface of the block is then lapped and sputtered with a magnetic pole material. A layer of alumina is then sputtered onto the magnetic pole material. After sputtering, the block is ground to create air bearing grooves and a plurality of poles. The bearing surface of the block is then lapped to the apex of an oblique interface between the shoe and core to create the throat of the pole. The block is cut into individual transducer cores which are then wrapped with a wire coil and attached to a flexbeam.
