A multi-piece vehicle wheel retention system includes a wheel disc, a first wheel cover and a second wheel cover. The first wheel cover is secured to the wheel disc and includes a generally U-shaped outer end, a first leg which extends generally parallel with respect to the axis, and a second leg which extends generally perpendicular to the first leg. The first wheel cover covers the entire portion of the outboard tire bead seat retaining flange of the wheel disc. The second wheel cover is secured to the first wheel cover and covers at least a portion of the outboard facing wheel surface of the wheel disc. The second wheel cover includes an outboard surface and an inboard surface. At least a portion of the second leg of the first wheel cover extends behind the second wheel cover so as to be adjacent the inboard surface of the second wheel cover and such portion of the second leg is at least secured to the second wheel cover by such portion of the second leg being disposed within a surface feature provided only on the inboard surface of the second wheel cover.

A process for attaching a wheel cover to a wheel in which a wheel cover and wheel are placed together and a foamable adhesive is injected into the gap defined between the wheel cover and wheel. After the foamable adhesive is injected into the gap defined between the wheel cover and wheel at an injection station, the cover/wheel assembly is transported to a station in which the cover/wheel assembly is heated to a temperature that is sufficient to effect the forming, expansion and curing of the foamable adhesive. The cover/wheel assemblies are supported and transported on carriers that are provided with clamping mechanisms.

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing a wheel cover and a vehicle wheel including such a wheel cover. The method for producing the vehicle wheel cover comprises the steps of: (a) providing a tooling fixture including at least a first tooling member and a second tooling member; (b) providing a wheel cover having at least a preformed outer end; (c) positioning the wheel cover onto the tooling fixture wherein the wheel cover is supported on the first tooling member and spaced apart from the second tooling member; (d) actuating the tooling fixture whereby the second tooling member is operative to engage and reshape the outer end of the wheel cover to produce a desired outer end shape; and (e) removing the wheel cover from the tooling fixture.

The present invention provides a compact and portable reconditioning station that avails all of the tools and materials that a technician needs for reconditioning a wheel. Additionally, the station enables the technician to rotate and index the wheel by depression of a footpedal to leave his hands free to manipulate the various tools that are used during the reconditioning process. The reconditioning station is easily transportable in its compact stowed configuration and is quickly deployable at the jobsite.

A retaining assembly secures ornamentation having an inboard surface and a plurality of protrusions to a wheel. The retaining assembly includes a ring. The ring includes a plurality of openings extending therethrough. The openings receive protrusions that extend out from the ornamentation. Legs extend out from the ring and engage multiple sides of a portion of the lug nuts. This secures the ornamentation to the wheel hub. The retaining assembly also includes supports that are secured between the legs. The supports provide support and prevent over-travel of the legs when the ornamentation is being installed by securing the ring to the lug nuts. The supports include an extension and a cross member. The extension positions the supports with respect to the ring and the cross members are bent and welded to the legs that are disposed adjacent thereto to provide support and prevent the over-travel of the legs as the legs pass over the lug nuts to which they are being secured.

A stainless steel wheel trim ring is constructed of an outer ring and a grip annulus. The outer ring is formed of a sheet metal band which is constructed from a rectangular blank having a pair of wedge shaped strain relief notches in a longitudinal edge adjacent to each end. The blank is welded at the joined ends to form the band. During manufacture, the band is expanded in the order of 25% at the longitudinal edge. A crimped peripheral bead along the longitudinal edge secures the grip annulus to the outer ring.

An improved construction and method of assembly for forming a simulated wire wheel trim is disclosed herein which employs axially inner and outer spoke retainer plate members which are secured together subsequent to assembly of spoke members thereto and operate to securely clamp the spoke members therebetween. The axially outer spoke retainer plate member is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings which are designed to loosely receive the radially inner ends of the spoke members before the radially outer ends thereof have been inserted in the openings provided in the outer ring assembly. Once the radially outer ends of the spoke members have been inserted and appropriately spaced openings provided in the outer ring assembly, the axially inner spoke retainer plate is assembled to the axially outer spoke retainer plates and operates to exert a generally axially and radially outwardly biasing action on the radially inner ends of the spoke members so as to secure them in position within the openings provided in the outer ring member as well as to exert a clamping action thereon so as to prevent any noise generating rattle thereof.

There is disclosed herein a wheel trim retention system comprising interengaging portions secured to opposing generally radially extending flange portions of the wheel trim and vehicle wheel which cooperate with each other to form a secure retention arrangement. In one form, the interengaging portions comprise a plurality of circumferentially spaced portions secured to corresponding flange portions of the wheel trim and vehicle wheel with a valve stem opening in the trim member serving to circumferentially position the trim member with respect to the wheel. Radial locating protrusions may also be provided on the trim which cooperate with flange portions of the vehicle wheel to axially align the mating portions as the wheel trim is installed thereon.
