A closed loop breathing system includes a face mask, a pressurized bottle of oxygen-rich breathing gas, and an exhalation hose and an inhalation hose both coupled to the face mask. A mixing valve mixes expired breathing gas from the face mask with oxygen-rich breathing gas from the pressurized container. A balanced exhalation valve assembly coupled to the exhalation hose includes a main valve which passes the flow of expired gas from the exhalation hose into a chamber and prevents the reverse flow of gas from the chamber into the exhalation hose. A flexible diaphragm forms one wall of the chamber and is coupled to the main valve by a rigid spacer to prevent a pressure increase in the chamber from increasing the force necessary to open the main valve.

Portable emergency breathing apparatus is disclosed which is comprised of a compressed breathing gas container having a housing mounted on the open end thereof which supports a pressure gauge, a pressure reducing valve assembly, and burst valve, fill valve and needle valve components. The pressure reducing valve controls the flow of breathing gas from the container to a breathing hose attached to the housing and leading to a face mask or hood worn by the user. The housing has a flat axially outer end relative to the container and a radially outer periphery which is within the cylindrical plane of the side wall of the container, and the housing is structured for mounting on the container so as to optimize compactness of the apparatus and protection of the pressure gauge and the pressure reducing, burst, fill and needle valves from damage during storage and use. A modification of the housing enables the apparatus to include two or more compressed breathing gas containers in side-by-side relationship, thus to increase the duration of use of the apparatus.

This oxygen enriching valve comprises a housing having a passage communicating to the exhalation system and a passage communicating to the atmosphere, a first valve which is provided in the passage communicating to the exhalation system and opens only when pressurized for exhalation and a second valve which is provided in the passage communicating to the atmosphere and is opened for a desired period of time by an external force such as manual operation so that the space inside the housing communicates with the atmosphere. By manually or otherwise opening the second valve of the oxygen enriching valve whenever necessary and making a few deep breathings, the exhaled air is discharged in the atmosphere, reducing the pressure in the circulation system and effecting automatic supply of oxygen, whereby insufficiency of oxygen supply can be avoided.

The kinetic energy of the jet is maintained constant irrespective of ambient pressure by a constant differential pressure regulator. A pneumatically operated servo valve responsive to the stagnation pressure in the receiver controls the admission of oxygen to the system.
