The glass melter has an outlet portion formed as a heating device for controlling the outlet flow rate of molten glass from the melter. Raw batch material that is used to form the molten glass is heated to a molten state at a first temperature range. The molten glass, while flowing toward the outlet of the melter, is cooled to a second temperature range to increase the viscosity of the molten glass to a desired level. The outlet member then heats the exiting molten glass a predetermined amount to decrease the glass viscosity in accordance with desired flow rate requirements. Heating of the outlet member is accomplished by imposing a relatively low voltage and a relatively high amperage on the outlet member. Accordingly, by using the outlet member as a heater a controlled flow rate of molten glass from the melter is achieved.

A process for making glass fibers is provided comprising supplying a stream of molten glass to a rotating rotor; discharging said glass through orifices in said rotor as a plurality of primary streams; and attenuating said primary streams into fibers, said spinner being fabricated from a superalloy by a process comprising electropolishing said rotor sufficient to substantially eliminate the "break-in" period otherwise associated with such rotors.

The present invention embraces apparatus for the production of mineral fibers. A bushing for the manufacture of mineral fibers, such as glass fibers, comprises an orificed bottom wall for the passage of streams of molten mineral material therethrough for attenuation into fibers, upwardly extending sidewalls and an orificed member, positioned above the bottom wall and extending between the sidewells, for passage of the molten mineral material therethrough to the bottom wall. The ratio of the poiseuille resistance to flow of the orificed member to the poiseuille resistance to flow of the bottom wall is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 1.0.

The hydraulic head of a cold top electric furnace for melting of batch, such as glass batch, employing an electric resistance heater, is electrically controlled by sensed temperature. The temperature is measured below the batch layer or crust at the area of interface transition from the solid material to the liquid melted state. A second sensor is placed within the furnace liner below and adjacent the screen heater within the molten material. The temperature signals at either of the locations are related to the hydraulic head within the furnace. The head is controlled responsive to these temperature signals by either adding additional material or diminishing the amount of material being added to the furnace.

A process and apparatus for producing light conducting fibers characterized by introducing multi-component glasses into a quartz glass crucible, melting the multi-component glasses, homogenizing and refining the melt, subsequently drawing the glass fiber through an opening in the base of the quartz crystal and then coating the fiber with an optically active synthetic material. During the homogenizing and refining of the melt, gas, such as dry oxygen, is introduced and passed through the melt. So that fibers of any length can be drawn, additional glass material in the form of premanufactured, highly pure glass rods are introduced into the crucible as necessary.

A marble feed system is disclosed for feeding glass marbles into a marble melt glass fiber forming bushing. The system comprises a storage container or hopper, a marble pre-melter, a glass fiber forming bushing, and a chute connecting the container or hopper to the pre-melter. The chute is specifically designed to prevent blockages of glass marbles due to bridging, oversized marbles and broken marbles during feeding. The novel design enables pure gravity flow of glass marbles without the need for external vibration of the feed system or other means of force feeding the marbles through the system.
