Abstract: In one embodiment, a radio-frequency identification device for use in a wellbore includes a housing made of a polymer; and an antenna disposed in the housing. The polymer may be selected from the group consisting of an elastomer, a plastic, a rubber, a thermoplastic elastomer, and combinations thereof. The RFID device may also include a fill material disposed in the housing.

Abstract: Automated control of a drillstring in a borehole, which is not in continuous rotation, the drillstring comprising an angled component (a bent sub or the like) and a downhole means of rotating the bit, such as a motor or turbine, which rotates the bit independently of drillstring rotation. Near the distal end of the drillstring are measurement devices, at least one and in some aspects two or more, which are used to measure the orientation of the drillstring/bent sub/bottomhole assembly/drill bit with respect to a geophysical field of the earth, such as magnetism (magnetic toolface) or gravity (gravitational toolface). These measurement devices may be connected to a communications module which transmits the downhole toolface information to the surface. The drillstring is controlled to provide that based upon the downhole measurements the drilling system drills the borehole in a desired trajectory.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are used in conjunction with a system for performing horizontal directional drilling, the system including a drill string extending from a drill rig to a boring tool such that the boring tool is steerable based on a roll orientation. The system also includes an arrangement for generating steering commands for guiding the boring tool to a target position. Responsive at least in part to the steering commands, a display is configured to selectively indicate each of a rotate command, a push command and a spin command. A steering indicator is described which indicates a current roll orientation of the boring tool. A 3-D grid can be animated and centered on either a steering or target indicator. Rounding of a steering command ratio can limit the display of target roll orientations to only those that a given boring tool transmitter is capable of sensing and indicating.

Abstract: A wellbore trajectory survey, having an ordered plurality of survey points, is acquired. Each of the plurality of survey points has a measured depth, an inclination, and a geographic location of the point in the wellbore corresponding to the survey point. The wellbore trajectory survey is ordered on measured depth. The processor identifies a minimum lateral measured depth (min_LMD), a maximum lateral measured depth (max_LMD). The processor identifies a mid-lateral point (mid_LMP) in the plurality of survey points whose measured depth (mid_LMD) is greater than min_LMD and less than max_LMD.

Abstract: An apparatus for drilling a well which includes a drill bit (2) arranged at the end of a length of drill tubing (4), a motor (3) to rotate the drill bit and steering means to steer the drill bit, and including torque measuring means (5) to measure the torque applied to the drill bit continuously and processing means to calculate values for the mechanical specific energy (MSB) and measured depth data over time whilst drilling. The processing means includes comparison means which is configured to compare the measured data with known data to determine the nature of the formation (6) being drilled compared to known types of formation, and which processing means is configured to indicate a change from a first formation type to a second formation type, thus indicating the presence of a formation boundary, when the drill bit is adjacent to or just past the formation boundary (7).

Abstract: A method to steer a drill bit of a rotary steerable system within a wellbore can include introducing the rotary steerable system into the wellbore. The method can further include establishing a magnetic model associated with the drill bit. Magnetic field parameters are measured at various locations of the rotary steerable system. A magnetic gradient tensor of the magnetic field parameters can be determined. Orientation parameters are solved with respect to the magnetic model and based on the magnetic gradient tensor. The drill bit can be steered based on the calculated parameters.

Abstract: A ranging system and method to determine a relative distance and direction of a target borehole relative to a second borehole using a ranging tool that can make ranging measurements while the ranging tool is not rotating. An array of button electrodes included in the ranging tool can be fired in a sequential fashion so as to simulate rotation of one or more button electrodes, without the ranging tool rotating. The array of button electrodes can also be fired in a sequential fashion so as to simulate rotational and/or longitudinal movement of the ranging tool.
