    摘要: The invention relates to an adjustable length fixation device having a head slidable along the shaft of the fixation device. The head is larger than the shaft and prevents further distal migration of the shaft and may preferably include an external surface for engaging bone to prevent proximal migration of the shaft. The head includes an engagement portion which may be deformed to securely engage the shaft to prevent removal of the head from the shaft. The invention also contemplates a method of insertion which includes inserting the shaft into the bone, sliding the head along the shaft and into engagement with the bone, securely engaging the head to the shaft, and severing the shaft proximal of the head to thereby form a fastener of the required length.

    摘要: A femoral intramedullary rod system capable of treating a variety of femoral bone fractures using a uniform intramedullary rod design. The system generally comprising an intramedullary rod defining an opening having an upper surface and a transverse member including a bone engaging portion and a connection portion defining a thru-hole with the nail sized to pass therethrough. A pin is selectively coupled to the transverse member to rigidly assemble the transverse member to the nail when the nail is passed through the thru-hole and the pin is received within the opening. In an alternative design, an epiphyseal stabilizer is joined to the nail by a locking member.

    摘要: A device for effecting progressive elongation of a sectioned bone having no extracutaneous elements, and a method for using the device, are presented. The device, which includes a pair of telescopically engaged cylindrical members, is inserted into the medullary space of the bone, and one cylindrical member is affixed to each section of bone. Under the normal torsions experienced by the affected limb, a clutch mechanism is provided that causes the cylindrical members to be forced apart, separating the sections of bone, at which site new bone growth is stimulated. Rotations as small as 1 degree are sufficient to activate elongation. A mechanism is also provided for sensing and measuring the amount of elongation that has occurred extracutaneously. In an alternate embodiment, instead of the clutch mechanism, elongation is achieved by magnetically driving an internal component with an externally applied magnetic field.
