Methods of machining a single piece hub with integral upper and lower female cones includes providing a single piece hub with upper and lower conical voids having respective narrow ends proximal each other and respective wide ends distal each other. Surfaces of the voids are machined using a tool provided from a single side of the hub that is dimensioned to fit through an opening defined by the interface between the narrow ends of the conical void. The tool can be moved parallel to a rotational axis for accessing conical surfaces of both voids and perpendicular to the rotational axis while contacting the surfaces so as to produce a final machined surface.

To simplify fabrication of an integral hub piece, the opening between the upper and lower female cones in this hub has sufficient width or radial dimension to allow access to both cones from one side of the hub with the cutting tool. A cutting tool is used which has a width smaller than the opening between the cones. Preferably, the tool has a width which is about equal to or smaller than an angular dimension through this opening which is defined by extending surfaces of the upper and lower female cones. If this limitation is satisfied, both cones can be created with a single machine set up operating from one side of the integrated hub.

The read sensor is positioned between the recessed portions of the top and bottom shields. The first flux guide is positioned between the top and bottom shields and extends from the air bearing surface toward the read sensor.

A high throughput sputtering apparatus having a plurality of integrally matched components in accordance with the present invention may further include means for transporting a plurality of substrates through said sputtering chambers at variable velocities; means for reducing the ambient pressure within said sputtering chambers to a vacuum level within a pressure range sufficient to enable sputtering operation; means for heating said plurality of substrates to a temperature conducive to sputtering said coatings thereon, said means for heating providing a substantially uniform temperature profile over the surface of said substrates; and control means for providing control signals to and for receiving feedback input from, said sputtering chambers, means for transporting, means for reducing, and means for heating, said control means being programmable for allowing control over said means for sputtering, means for transporting, means for reducing and means for heating.

Embodiments of the invention are directed to an etching apparatus for removing impurities from the surface of a substrate, such as a pallet and disc. Embodiments of the etching apparatus comprise a magnetic source, a cleaning chamber, a substrate transportation mechanism and a power source. The magnetic source is placed within the cleaning chamber, or vacuum chamber, which is configured to bombard the magnetic source with plasma. The substrate transportation mechanism resides within the cleaning chamber and is used to pull the pallet through the chamber between the spacing between the magnet towers. The power source, which is a DC source, is coupled to the pallet and produces an electric field which ionizes the plasma.

The present disclosure concerns a method and apparatus for accessing a memory device, such as a dynamic random access memory (DRAM). The DRAM has a plurality of rows, wherein each row has a plurality of DRAM paragraphs comprised of a plurality of contiguous columns. A linear shift register (LSR) translates a plurality of logical addresses to corresponding physical address locations in the DRAM. Each translated physical address is comprised of a row address and a column address. A physical address, including the row and column addresses, is accessed from the LSR. To access the DRAM paragraph at the accessed physical address, the row in the DRAM at the accessed row address location is strobed to setup and precharge the row. Following, all columns in the DRAM paragraph at the accessed physical address are strobed. After strobing the columns in a DRAM paragraph, the next physical address in the LSR, including the next row and column addresses, is accessed. The row in the DRAM at the next accessed row address is strobed to setup and precharge the row upon determining that the next row address is different than the previously accessed row address. Regardless of whether the next accessed row address is strobed or whether the previous precharge and setup is maintained, all columns in the DRAM paragraph at the accessed physical address are strobed.

A disc mounting system for mounting the discs of a disc drive in a fixed radial relationship to the hub of a spindle motor, the disc mounting system including a composite disc spacer that maintains the discs in a fixed radial relationship to the spindle motor hub. The composite disc spacer includes a wedge member which supports a plurality of axially extending fingers which include inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces that bear against the spindle motor hub and against the bores of the discs to maintain the discs in a fixed concentric relationship to the spindle motor hub. The composite also has a spacer that extends about the wedge member to provide fixed relative axial spacing of the discs. The wedge member and the spacer interlock to facilitate handling of the composite disc spacer during assembly.

An improved crash stop apparatus having an inner crash stop that pressingly engages the actuator assembly of a disc drive when the read/write heads of the actuator assembly approach a desired inner extent of radial travel to prevent further movement of the read/write head beyond the inner extent of travel and furthermore having an outer crash stop that pressingly engages the actuator assembly when the read/write heads approach a desired outer extent of radial travel. The crash stops each have a pin rigidly mounted at a proximal end and having a cantilevered distal portion which is disposed in the path of travel of the actuator. An elastomeric member is disposed between the impacting actuator and the pin. The elastomeric member and cantilevered pin provide a two-stage braking impulse to decelerate the actuator, wherein the first stage compresses the elastomeric member and wherein the second stage deflects the cantilevered pin.
