    摘要: A write element for perpendicular recording in a data storage system is fabricated to maintain the thickness of a side shield at both edges of a pole P3, and to form the pole P3 in a trapezoidal shape. Forming a side shield around the pole P3 removes stray fields, creating a quiet, noise-free write element and preventing side erasure. The fabrication method utilizes a magnetic buffer layer to protect a shield gap during trim of the pole P3, and thus to provide the shield gap with a uniform thickness. The magnetic buffer layer also protects the shield gap and pole P3 when the top hard mask is removed. Consequently, the write field is made uniform across the track width. The fabrication method uses a metal in the shield gap to improve the pole geometry after pole trim and to provide a uniform edge to the pole P3.

A method of the invention provides forming an anti-reflective layer before forming a mask layer. During photolithography the anti-reflective layer suppresses undesirable reflections off of features, such as vertical sidewalls, that otherwise limit how closely to such features portions of the mask layer can be formed.

An underlayer overlies the side of the magnetoresistive sensor, and a hard bias layer overlies at least part of the underlayer and defines a hard bias junction with the underlayer. A lead is formed atop the hard bias layer. The hard bias junction is recessed from the edge of the magnetoresistive sensor by a predetermined recess distance, to provide stability and sensitivity to the read element.

    摘要: A thin film electromagnetic head has an inductive transducer with a ferromagnetic pole layer terminating adjacent a media-facing surface at a pole tip surface. The pole layer has side surfaces each having an end region that meets the pole tip surface, the end regions increasingly separated with increasing distance from the pole tip surface. Having a pole layer that is tapered to the point at which it meets the pole tip surface channels flux more efficiently for writing on-track as opposed to off-track. Such a tapered pole tip can be formed for a pair of pole layers separated by a submicron nonferromagnetic gap, or for a single perpendicular writing pole layer.

    摘要: Head gimbal assemblies are provided that comprise a slider, a load beam, a flexure, and a lifter tab. The flexure holds the slider against a pivot point of the load beam. The lifter tab extends from the load beam to engage a load/unload ramp. The load beam includes a base portion having the pivot point, a first side rail, and a first limiter stop. The first side rail is disposed adjacent to a transverse side of the slider while the first limiter stop is adjacent to a leading side of the slider. The first limiter stop extends from the first side rail and is essentially perpendicular thereto. The flexure includes a first leading edge tab that extends between the first limiter stop and the base portion of the load beam to limit the movement of the flexure especially during loading and unloading.

According to another embodiment, the thermal restraint section is formed under the read section.
