A solution is provided to transcode a signal from a first signal type to a second signal type to ensure proper interfacing between devices that may operate using different signal types. For example, within a communication system, a first signal type (having a first modulation type, e.g., 8 PSK) may be received. The transcoder then ensures that this signal, after it has undergone any initial processing (such as tuning, down-converting, decoding, and so on), is encoded into a second signal type (having a second modulation type, e.g., QPSK) such that it can interface properly with a device for which the received signal is intended. This transcoder functionality may be implemented within discrete components, or it may alternatively be integrated within a functional block of an integrated circuit. This functionality may be implemented in a variety of communication systems including satellite, cable television, Internet, and others.

    摘要: Carrier signals are modulated by information (e.g., television) signals in a particular frequency range. The information signals are oversampled at a first frequency greater than any of the frequencies in the particular frequency range to provide digital signals at a second frequency. The digital signals are introduced to a carrier recovery loop which provides a feedback to regulate the frequency of the digital signals at the second frequency. The digital signals are introduced to a symbol recovery loop which provides a feedback to maintain the time for the production of the digital signals in the middle of the data signals. The gain of the digital signals is also regulated in a feedback loop. The digital signals are processed to recover the data in the data signals. By providing digital feedbacks, the information recovered from the digital signals can be quite precise. In one embodiment, the carrier signals are demodulated to produce baseband inphase and quadrature signals. The inphase and quadrature signals are then oversampled and regulated in the feedback loops as described above. In a second embodiment, the carrier signals downconverted to produce intermediate frequency signals which are oversampled to produce the digital signals at the second frequency without producing the inphase and quadrature signals. The oversampled signals are then regulated in the feedback loops as described above. In a third embodiment, the carrier signals are oversampled without being downconverted and without producing the inphase and quadrature signals.

    摘要: The present invention comprises a direct digital frequency synthesizer. A phase accumulator provides a normalized angle .theta. to a sine/cosine generator that outputs the value of the sine/cosine function at the provided angle. The she/cosine generator in a preferred embodiment comprises a plurality of multiplierless butterfly and carry-save stages in cascade that perform angle rotations on a phasor on the unit circle whose x and y coordinates correspond to cosine and sine values. To calculate the sine and cosine values at a particular angle .theta.=b.sub.1 .theta..sub.1 +b.sub.2 .theta..sub.2 +. . . +b.sub.N .theta..sub.N where b.sub.k .epsilon. {0, 1} are the binary bits and the .theta..sub.k =2.sup.-k are the associated positional weights, each of the butterfly and carry-save stages rotate the phasor by an amount .theta..sub.k =2.sup.-k. The direction of the rotation, clockwise or counter-clockwise, depends upon the value of the binary bits b.sub.k. After undergoing all of the rotations, the phasor has x and y coordinates that approximate the desired cosine and sine values to a specified accuracy. In a preferred embodiment, the datapath of the present invention is multiplierless. The stages for angles where the approximation tan .theta..sub.k =.theta..sub.k is acceptable are multiplierless while for angles where this approximation does not hold, the x and y phasor coordinates are transformed through a multiplexer or a ROM.
