Abstract:
The present invention relates to an improved photographic polyester support base coated with a first hydrophobic subbing layer and a second hydrophilic subbing layer, the improvement consisting of having said second subbing layer derived from a hardener containing, aqueous coating composition including (1) gelatin, (2) a vinyl addition polymer compound and (3) a low viscosity highly sulfonated water soluble polyacetal compound derived from the reaction of an aldehyde sulfonic acid compound with a polyvinyl alcohol compound, the relative quantities of said gelatin and vinyl addition polymer compound to the polyacetal compound being such as to provide good adhesion characteristics without any significant loss in antistatic properties.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to an antistatic polymeric film base comprising a polymeric film having coated on at least one side thereof an antistatic layer comprising the reaction product of (1) a water-soluble, electrically conductive polymer containing carboxylic groups and (2) a water-soluble polymer containing oxazoline groups, and to a photographic element comprising at least one silver halide emulsion layer on said antistatic polymeric film base. This antistatic layer may be present as a backing layer on the side of the film base opposite the silver halide emulsion layer, as a subbing layer between the film base and the emulsion layer in a single or double side coated photographic element, and/or as a subbing layer between the film base and a different backing layer.
Abstract:
A photographic element comprising a polymeric film base, a silver halide emulsion layer, and an antistatic layer comprising a colloidal vanadium oxide and a vinyl addition polymer dispersion in a dry weight ratio of from 1:30 to 1:500. The antistatic layer may be present as a backing layer on the side of the base opposite the silver halide emulsion layer, as a subbing layer between the base and the emulsion layer in a single or double side coated photographic element, and/or as a subbing layer between the base and a different backing layer. No barrier layer is used over the antistatic layer.
Abstract:
A photographic base is protected against the adverse effects resulting from the accumulation of static electrical charges by providing it with a first antistatic hydrophilic layer and a second protective hydrophobic layer coated onto said first layer, said first layer having been formed by coating onto said base a liquid coating composition comprising a hydrophilic non-diffusing sulfonated polymer in the presence of an epoxy-silane compound. The antistatic base is particularly useful for photographic elements comprising at least one photosensitive image-forming layer, on one side thereof, and the first antistatic layer and the second protective layer on the opposite side thereof. The antistatic layer is durable, abrasion-resistant, non-tacky and can withstand the aqueous photographic processings without adverse effects.

Abstract:
A photographic element comprising a film support base, an adhesion promoting layer, a subbing layer and at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, wherein the adhesion promoting layer is close to the support and contains a silane compound and a polyurethane, and the subbing layer, selected within the group consisting of a hydrophilic colloidal layer or a layer comprising a continuous gelled network of inorganic particles, is positioned between the adhesion promoting layer and the emulsion layer. The present invention also refers to a photographic element comprising a film support base having coated on one side thereof at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and on the opposite side thereof an adhesion promoting layer and at least one auxiliary layer, wherein the adhesion promoting layer is close to the support and contains a silane compound and a polyurethane. The present invention further refers to a film support base having coated on at least one side thereof an adhesion promoting layer and a subbing layer, wherein the adhesion promoting layer is close to the support and contains a silane compound and a polyurethane and the subbing layer is selected within the group consisting of a hydrophilic colloidal layer or a layer comprising a continuous gelled network of inorganic particles. Finally, the present invention also refers to a film support base having coated on one side thereof an adhesion promoting layer and at least an auxiliary layer, wherein the adhesion promoting layer is close to the support and contains a silane compound and a polyurethane binder and the auxiliary layer is an antistatic layer, a magnetic layer, a protective layer or a lubricant layer. The adhesion of the emulsion layers and/or of the auxiliary layers to the support base is improved both under wet and dry conditions.
Abstract:
One object of the present invention is to provide a mixture composed of 1) a cellulose ether derivative esterified at least with a biprotic acid group derivative expressed by the formula HOOC—B—COOH (I), wherein B is a linear aliphatic group represented by (CH2)x with x a positive integer from 1 to 5 or is a 5-member or 6-member cycloaliphatic group and 2) a cellulose or cellulose derivative esterified at least with a phthalic acid derivative represented by the following formula (II). wherein R1 is an all group and y is a positive integer from 0 to 3. Said mixture shows an enhanced stability against hydrolysis when subjected to conditioning at high relative humidity and temperature. The composition may be useful in order to get antihalation layer on photographic films as well as enteric coating of pharmaceutical dosage and for controlled-release applications such as for cleaning formulation.
