摘要: An occupant protection apparatus comprises an inflatable airbag with a panel, the panel including a first vent opening that permits inflation fluid to escape out of the airbag; and a valve sheet including a second vent opening movable relative to the first vent opening, the valve sheet having opposite ends that are each fixed to a surface of the airbag. One end of the valve sheet moves with the panel during inflation of the airbag to move the second vent opening relative to the first vent opening. The apparatus also includes a valve guide to guide movement of the valve sheet relative to the panel, the valve sheet is capable of sliding between the valve guide and the panel. Both ends of the valve sheet remain fixed to the panel during and after inflation of the airbag.

摘要: An airbag module integrates the components required for gas generation, thereby eliminating the need for a separate inflation component. The airbag module can comprise a cover with a pocket, a gas generant container, an inflatable cushion an upper and lower retainer housing, and an inflation gas generation system in fluid communication with the cushion. The airbag module does not comprise a discrete inflator that is functional outside the assembled airbag module. The gas generant container houses a package of solid gas generating compound. The energetic materials of the propellant do not become functional as a gas generation source until the cover is secured to the lower retainer housing.

摘要: First and second tear seams separated by a central portion of a panel of an air bag module cover define opposing first and second lateral edges of an air bag door, and are adapted so as to provide for a first region of the first central portion. Upon actuation of the associated air bag inflator, the tear seams fracture allowing the air bag to first deploy laterally, after which the first region of the panel is fractured responsive to relatively higher stresses therein, thereby opening the air bag door. In one embodiment, the tear seams extend along portions of the upper and lower boundaries of the air bag door, and a third tear seam is provided between the portions of the first and second tear seams on one of the upper and lower boundaries, wherein the third tear seam is relatively stronger than the first and second tear seams.

摘要: A new and useful load-limiting device for a vehicle occupant restraint is provided. The load-limiting device comprises a mechanical structure designed to dissipate forces applied by a vehicle occupant to the load-limiting device during a crash, to absorb energy applied to a vehicle occupant during a crash. Moreover, the design of the load-limiting device of the present invention provides significant flexibility in designing the predetermined manner in which the load-limiting device dissipates forces during a crash, thereby providing flexibility in how energy of a vehicle occupant is absorbed during a crash. In its basic form, the load limiting device comprises a housing and a deformable member, at least one of which is configured for connection to a vehicle safety belt and the other of which is configured for connection to an anchor point (e.g. a structural part of a vehicle). The housing and the deformable member are moveable relative to each other in a predetermined manner when force is applied to the one of those members, and the housing supports a hardened member formed of a material which is harder than the deformable member and which is positioned to engage and deform the deformable member as the deformable member is being moved relative to the housing. The configuration of the deformable member can be designed so that the deformable member will deform in a predetermined manner under forces applied to the load-limiting device by a vehicle occupant during a crash.

摘要: Disclosed is a safety restraint design controller for controlling the design of a safety restraint system so that a predetermined desired level of an occupant's response is produced. The controller has a database for storing a occupant restraint factor response model. The model interrelates at least one predetermined restraint factor with the occupant response; the restraint factors having a level which is indicative of setting values for controlling the safety restraint design. A database engine connected to the database determines a level for the occupant response based upon the model and upon a first level of the restraint factors. A solver is connected to the database engine for determining a second level of the restraint factors which produces the desired level of the occupant response based upon the desired level of the occupant response from the database engine whereby the safety restraint design is controlled based upon the determined second level of the restraint factors which produces the desired level of the safety response.

摘要: A rotatable spool has seat belt webbing wound around the spool. A motor, when actuated, rotates the spool in the belt withdrawal direction. A spring has a biasing force which rotates the spool to wind the belt webbing onto the spool. A worm gear mechanism is located between the motor and the spool and is selectively drivingly connectable with the spool. When drivingly connected with the spool, the worm gear mechanism prevents the biasing force of the spring from winding the belt webbing onto the spool. A clutch, when engaged, connects the spool and the worm gear mechanism. The clutch is disengaged and the motor is deactuated when a belt tension signal is below a lower predetermined threshold value. The clutch is engaged and the motor is actuated when the belt tension signal is above an upper predetermined threshold value which is greater than the lower predetermined threshold value. The clutch is engaged and the motor is deactuated when the belt tension signal is between the upper and lower predetermined threshold values. A pressure sensor provides the belt tension signal which continuously varies in magnitude as the amount of tension in the belt webbing continuously varies.

摘要: A rotatable spool has seat belt webbing wound around the spool. A motor, when actuated, rotates the spool in the belt withdrawal direction. A spring has a biasing force which rotates the spool to wind the belt webbing onto the spool.
