Abstract: An autotransfusion system for salvaging, washing, and concentrating blood and returning the blood to a patient during surgery. The system comprises both a filtration unit and an ultrafiltration unit. The ultrafiltration unit is configured so as to communicate with the filtration unit, and both the filtration unit and the ultrafiltration unit are provided with a suitable conduit for conveying blood back to a patient. The ultrafiltration unit is divided into two chambers by a semipermeable membrane, the membrane being selected so as to permit fluid to pass therethrough, while preventing the passage of blood cells and other formed elements.A mixture of healthy blood cells, fluid, and particulate debris is salvaged from an operative field of a patient. The blood mixture is filtered in the filtration unit and can then be immediately returned to the patient, if needed. Alternatively, the filtered mixture is conveyed to the ultrafiltration unit where a portion of the fluid is removed from the mixture and wherein the healthy blood cells may be washed by the addition of a washing solution. The washed and concentrated blood cells are then returned to the patient through a suitable return line.

Abstract: The disclosed surgical suction wand assembly and method includes a modular suction wand including a hollow suction tip the interior of which has a square or other suitable polygonal cross-sectional configuration which substantially improves the precision and facility with which apertures may be formed in the suction tip. The tip may be provided with an elongated interiorly disposed tube simultaneously providing for effective aspiration of small amounts of liquid as well as a large suction area for efficiently aspirating larger volumes with minimal opportunity for obstruction. The suction tip is provided with a coupling device adapted to receive any one of a plurality of adaptor configurations constructed so as to increase the versatility of the suction tip without requiring large numbers of separate forming molds.

Abstract: A device for aspirating air emboli from a blood vessel (e.g. the aorta during open-heart surgery), the aspirating device having a hollow cannula with radially spaced openings for aspirating air and bending angularly mid-length to permit aspiration of air emboli while maintaining the device generally flat against the exposed patient surface. A hub comprising part of the device is constructed to provide a dual coupling presenting both male and female attachment sites.

Abstract: A bubble oxygenator for oxygenating blood in an extracorporeal circuit. The oxygenator is formed from three concentric shells which define an oxygenating chamber, a defoaming chamber and an arterial reservoir. The arterial reservoir includes a view chamber which permits visual inspection of the level of blood held in the arterial reservoir. The outer shell which forms the arterial reservoir is rotatable with respect to the remainder of the apparatus so that the view chamber can be easily positioned for observation.

Abstract: A blood oxygenator having two separable components one of which is disposable and the other of which is reusable and sterilizable. The disposable portion of the oxygenator is multichambered and provides an oxygenating chamber, a defoaming chamber and an arterial reservoir constructed so that blood will flow sequentially therethrough. The reusable member is constructed in the form of a cover for the oxygenator and has depending therefrom a heat exchanger for maintaining the temperature of the blood, the heat exchanger projecting telescopically into the oxygenating chamber. Defoaming is assisted by a cellular foam material rolled into a generally cylindrical configuration and having abutting faces which are bias cut so that the line formed by the abutting faces is not coaxial with the blood flow path. The device is assembled by inserting the defoaming material into the defoaming chamber of the open-topped oxygenator, then telescopically inserting the heat exchanger into the oxygenating chamber while placing the cover on the top of the oxygenator and thereafter removably securing the cover to the oxygenator.
