Abstract:
A composition of a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity; a secondary or tertiary amine being represented by the formula R1R2NR3 wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups of at least 6 carbon atoms and R3 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group, a hydroxyl-containing alkyl group, or an amine-containing alkyl group; and a dispersant, provides high static coefficients of friction and a durable positive slope during oxidative and mechanical stressing, particularly as a friction component of an automatic transmission.
Abstract:
A fluid composition of (a) a friction modifier derived from the reaction of a carboxylic acid or a reactive equivalent thereof with an aminoalcohol, the friction modifier containing at least two hydrocarbyl groups; and (b) a dispersant other than a species of (a), provides good friction properties to an automatic transmission.
Abstract:
A multifunctional dispersant useful in lubricating compositions is prepared by heating together (a) a dispersant and (b) 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a hydrocarbyl-substituted 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole which is substantially insoluble in a hydrocarbon oil of lubricating viscosity at 25° C., and further either (c) a borating agent or (d) an inorganic phosphorus compound, or both (c) and (d). The heating is sufficient to provide a reaction product of (a), (b), and (c) or (d) which is soluble in hydrocarbon oil at 25° C.
Abstract:
A lubricating composition containing (a) a hydrocarbyl phosphite; (b) the condensation product of at least one fatty acid with a polyamine; (c) a borate ester; (d) a borated dispersant; and (e) an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further relates to the use of the composition in automotive transmissions.
Abstract:
A lubricating oil composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a total of from about 1 to about 50% by weight of copolymers comprising (A) at least one ethylene-aliphatic olefin copolymer wherein the aliphatic olefins contain from 3 to about 24 carbon atoms, said copolymer (A) having Mn ranging from about 600 to about 5000, and (B) at least one copolymer comprising units derived from alkyl acrylate ester monomers containing from 2 to about 25 carbon atoms in the ester group, and optionally, from about 0.1% to about 20% by weight of at least one member of the group consisting of vinyl aromatic monomers and nitrogen-containing vinyl monomers. said copolymer (B) having Mn ranging from about 10,000 to about 350,000, wherein the weight ratio of (A):(B) ranges from about 99:1 to about 1:99.
Abstract:
A phthalic acid such as terephthalic acid is made soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity by first mixing it with at least one phosphorus compound. The resulting product is useful for reducing corrosion in a transmission lubricant.
