Abstract:
A portable electronic device may be configured for play of a video game, with user controlled game characters operated based on inputs received on first user inputs of the device and a virtual game world modified based on information from motion-related sensors of the device. The modification of the virtual game world may be rotation and/or translation of the virtual game world in a gravitational reference frame. The portable electronic device may also allow for user configuration of the virtual game world.
Abstract:
A system for cooling components of a power generation system. The system may include a working fluid, 100% of which may be sent to a heat exchanger for cooling the components. During cooling, the working fluid may be retained in liquid form. All of the working fluid exiting the heat exchanger may be introduced to an evaporator which may transform the working fluid to a gas for use by an expander or other device to create motive power to run a generator. Upon exiting the expander, the gas may be condensed back to liquid form, 100% of which may be sent back to the heat exchanger to cool the components.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling robots based on prioritized targets extracted from fused visual and auditory saliency maps. The fused visual and auditory saliency map may extend beyond the immediate visual range of the robot yet the methods herein allow the robot to maintain an awareness of targets outside the immediate visual range. The fused saliency map may be derived in a bottom-up or top-down approach and may be feature based or object based.
Abstract:
Described is a bio-inspired vision system for object recognition. The system comprises an attention module, an object recognition module, and an online labeling module. The attention module is configured to receive an image representing a scene and find and extract an object from the image. The attention module is also configured to generate feature vectors corresponding to color, intensity, and orientation information within the extracted object. The object recognition module is configured to receive the extracted object and the feature vectors and associate a label with the extracted object. Finally, the online labeling module is configured to alert a user if the extracted object is an unknown object so that it can be labeled.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an interactive patient system comprising: apparatus; sensing means associated with the apparatus, the sensing means adapted to send, receive or identify a location signal; presence identification means associated with a region of a patient, the presence identification means adapted to send, receive or identify a location signal; and altering means adapted to alter a property of the apparatus in proximity to the presence identification means upon identification of an activity signal, thereby effecting an activity in the vicinity of the region of the patient, wherein the activity signal is associated with transmission or identification of at least one location signal as between the sensing means and the presence identification means. Also provided is a method for providing a directed response to a region of a patient.
Abstract:
A closed cycle recuperator microturbine and an open cycle heat generating system for supplying heat for driving the turbine includes a pair of valves fluidly connected to the compressor inlet and compressor outlet for bleeding air therefrom when the microturbine engine is operating in the lower power operating envelope of the operating conditions of the microturbine engine while the open cycle heat generating system maintains the thermodynamic conditions of the microturbine engine operating substantially a constant value whereby the fuel consumption of the microturbine engine is enhanced during the low power conditions. The microturbine engine serves to power an electric generator and a ECU heater.
Abstract:
A pressure ulcer prosthesis (10) having an elongated body (11) to support a patient's limb. The body (11) has a longitudinally extending support surface (13) that is arcuate and concave in transverse cross section. A distal end (12) having a surface (18) extends away from the surface (13) so as to diverge therefrom so that a portion of the limb adjacently surface (18) is released from pressure.
Abstract:
A method of producing a torque transmission between a driving member and a driven member including the steps of capturing an annular gear within the interior of a hollow cylindrical shell formed of a formable material which is caused to be flow formed around a portion of the exterior of the gear to militate against any relative longitudinal and axial movement between the shell and the gear.
Abstract:
An externally splined clutch hub and method for making the same is disclosed wherein a flat circular metal preform with a central opening is provided; and the preform is contacted with a single forging die to simultaneously cold forge a centrally disposed tubular neck extending outwardly from one side of the preform and simultaneously a splined annular ring at the periphery of the preform and extending outwardly from the other side of the preform wherein the tubular neck and the annular ring are coaxial.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods according to the present invention preferably utilize electroosmotic pumps in fluid handling and field sampling applications. The electroosmotic pumps used in these applications are capable of generating high pressure and flow without moving mechanical parts and the associated generation of unacceptable electrical and acoustic noise, as well as the associated reduction in reliability. Having multiple small flow channels in parallel provides both a high flow rate and high pressure in liquid handling. These electroosmotic pumps are fabricated with materials and structures that improve performance, efficiency, and reduce weight and manufacturing cost relative to presently available micropumps. These electroosmotic pumps also allow for recapture of evolved gases and deposited materials, which may provide for long-term closed-loop operation. Apparatus and methods according to the present invention also allow active regulation of the fluid handling and field sampling devices through electrical control of the flow through the pump. Electroosmotic pumping enables precise dispensing of samples to form genetic, proteomic, or small molecule arrays. A fluid sensor which can be optical, capacitive or other type of electrical sensor is integrated with the electroosmotic pump for measuring liquid levels in liquid drawing and dispensing operations.
