Abstract: Through-the-road (TTR) hybrid designs using control strategies such as an equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) or an adaptive ECMS are implemented at the supplemental torque delivering electrically powered drive axle (or axles) in a manner that follows operational parameters or computationally estimates states of the primary drivetrain and/or fuel-fed engine, but does not itself participate in control of the fuel-fed engine or primary drivetrain. BSFC-type data particular to the paired-with fuel-fed engine allows an ECMS implementation (or other similar control strategy) to adapt to efficiency curves for the particular fuel-fed engine and to improve overall efficiencies of the TTR hybrid configuration.

Abstract: Systems and methods of providing a configurable powertrain in a vehicle are disclosed. The powertrain is capable of operating in a plurality of powertrain configurations and includes one or more reversible generators, a battery system, a motor/generator (M/G), and one or more drive axles. The generators generate and supply electrical power to the battery system, the M/G, an external power source, or a combination thereof. The battery system selectively supplies electrical power to the generators, the M/G, the external power source, or a combination thereof. The one or more generators also selectively supply cooling to the battery system, a cab of the vehicle, a trailer or external enclosure or structure of the vehicle, or a combination thereof. The powertrain configurations of the vehicle include operating the components of the powertrain in various combinations based on demands of the vehicle and/or external power sources or structures.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method executed using a computer that is communicatively coupled to an actuator comprises, in one embodiment: obtaining, from electronic memory coupled to the computer, a target setpoint value, upper bound value, lower bound value, and proximity value; continuously measuring, using the actuator, a current value of a metric associated with the actuator; in response to determining, based on the proximity value, that the current value is near the upper bound value or that a rate of approach of the current value to the upper bound value is greater than an approach threshold, signaling the actuator to cause a reduction of the metric; in response to determining, based on the proximity value, that the current value is near the lower bound value or that a rate of approach of the current value to the lower bound value is greater than an approach threshold, signaling the actuator to cause an increase in the metric.

Abstract: A battery system having two battery packs may be configured in a high-voltage mode with the two battery packs connected in series to a converter/inverter controller. If a fault is detected with one of the batteries, selected switches are opened or closed to isolate the affected battery, whereby the battery system is configured to use the other battery to operate in a low voltage mode. A vehicle having a battery system capable of operating in either the high-voltage mode or the low-voltage mode is still capable of completing a route in the low-voltage mode. If a battery is isolated due to a transient condition, the battery system may be reconfigured to operate in the high voltage mode once the transient condition has passed.

A thermal management system may determine a battery temperature for the set of batteries and cause one or more of a coolant system, a refrigerant system, an exhaust gas system or an ambient air heat exchanger to add heat to the set of batteries or transfer heat away from the set of batteries.

Abstract: A battery pallet racking system stores a plurality of battery pallets for use by a plurality of vehicles and manages charging the plurality of battery pallets based on the needs of the plurality of vehicles. Abstract: A drive train for installation in a vehicle chassis includes a power source, two motor/generators (M/Gs), an array of batteries, and a control system for configuring the drive train to operate using only the power source, only the batteries or a combination of the power source and batteries. The control system may open or close clutches to configure the drive train with each M/G working as a motor or a generator. A M/G working as a motor may use power from the batteries to supply rotational power to drive the vehicle or operate accessories on the vehicle. A M/G working as a generator coupled to a power source generates electric power for charging the array of batteries. The vehicle, including components and subsystems, may be powered electrically from the batteries or powered from the engine.
