Such resins are particularly useful for the preparation of pressure sensitive adhesives, especially when such resins are mixed with other hydrocarbon-derived resins having high softening points in the range of about 80.degree. There is disclosed a hydrocarbon derived resin having a structure characterized by a softening point in the range of about 0.degree. C. to about 45.degree. C. and comprising from about 40 to about 80 weight percent units derived from piperylene and correspondingly from about 60 to about 20 weight percent units derived from 2-methyl-2-butene prepared by the method which comprises polymerizng a mixture comprising from about 20 to about 75 weight percent piperylene and correspondingly from about 80 to about 25 weight percent 2-methyl-2-butene in the presence of a catalyst selected from antimony pentafluoride and ferric chloride. The resin has particular utility when combined with rubber as a tackifier to form pressure sensitive adhesives.

A resinous material, suitable for use in hot melt adhesives, having a softening point in the range of about 60.degree. C to about 110.degree. C prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture selected from specific amounts of styrene, isobutylene and 1,3-butadiene, where the mole ratio of isobutylene to butadiene is in the range of about 0.5/1 to about 3/1. The resinous material itself is prepared by polymerizing the selected monomers and their required amounts in the presence of a catalyst selected from aluminum chloride and ethylaluminum dichloride and in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent containing dissolved water.

This invention relates to a thixotropic thickening agent and to a process for preparing the same. Such thixotropic thickening agents are particularly useful for thickening water reducible coatings. The thixotropic thickening agents of this invention are copolymers which are comprised of repeat units which are derived from methacrylic acid monomer, ethylacrylate monomer, and a water soluble crosslinking agent. The water soluble crosslinking agents which can be used include ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and alkylene bisacrylamides, such as N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide. A neutralized two weight percent aqueous solution of the thixotropic thickening agents of this invention will have a Brookfield RVT viscosity as measured at 50 rpm using a number 3 spindle within the range of 50 to 2000 centipoise (cps).
