In certain applications, the open side would be enclosed by a glass enclosure. In order to increase the efficiency of the lighting fixture, an anti-reflection coating can be provided on both sides of the glass enclosure. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONMany different types of lighting fixtures hereto fore have been provided. However in connection with such lighting fixtures there always is a need for increased reflectivity from the reflective portions of the lighting fixture. In addition, there is a further requirement to obtain better control over the direction of the light emitted from the lighting fixture. Therefore there is a need for a new and improved lighting fixture which is more efficient and one which emits more light rays at high angles.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION AND OBJECTSThe lighting fixture consists of a housing which has an open side. A lamp is mounted in the housing and produces light rays through the open side of the housing. The housing carries an internal reflecting surface for reflecting light rays from the lamp through the open side. The internal reflecting surface includes Fresnel type portions for reflecting light rays at higher angles through the open side. High reflecting coatings are provided on the Fresnel portions to increase the efficiency of the lighting fixture. In certain applications a glass enclosure is provided to cover the open side of the housing. To also increase the efficiency, anti-reflection coatings are provided on both surfaces of the glass enclosure.In general, it is an object of the present invention to provide a lighting fixture in which increased efficiency is obtained by increasing the reflectivity from reflective portions of the lighting fixture.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character which is provided with Fresnel type reflecting surfaces for increasing the amount of light which is emitted from the fixture at high angles.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which it is possible to direct the rays in any desired direction from the light fixture without depending on the overall surface configuration of the reflecting surface.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which the light emitted at high angles directly from the lamp is increased.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which it is possible to reduce the profile of the lighting fixture.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character which has an increased coefficient of utilization.Additional objects and features of the invention will appear from the following description in which the preferred embodiment are set forth in detail in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Luminaires equipped with an improved high efficiency, wide light distribution lighting panel provide more favorable ESI values and may be spaced farther apart than conventional ones. The lighting panel includes three bands of conical prismatic elements; these bands are spaced on 5-inch centers from each other and are separated by substantially transparent bands having shallow 15.degree. flutes to soften the lamp images. Outside the bands of conical prisms are bands of lengthwise elevating prisms for increasing the spread of light to the sides of the fixture. Outside the elevating bands are bands of lengthwise depressing prisms. A single panel design provides similar excellent optical characteristics for either a two-lamp or three-lamp troffer.

A portable traffic signal photometer is capable of rapidly and effectively measuring the intensity of light emanating from a traffic signal light. The photometer includes a housing member with a circular front opening for engagement with the lens of a traffic signal light. The photometer is pressed against the lens, and the light emanating from the traffic signal light is directed through an optical filter located inside the housing, which permits light from the traffic signal light emanating at a predetermined downward angle to pass through it. The light from the filter is directed onto a light-sensitive device, which produces an output signal proportional to the intensity of the light emitted by the traffic signal lens. Additional light-responsive photocells are provided to produce signals indicative of the respective color of the traffic signal light being measured by the photometer, and the composite of the color and the light intensity is used to produce a display which permits the user to determine whether the traffic signal light is properly operating within its designed specifications.

A refractive lens member for use with a luminaire is constructed to minimize high angle glare. The grid comprises a plurality of lenses which are interconnected by a rib structure to form a pattern of lenses in a network grid, with the lenses all lying substantially in the same plane. Each individual lens has a flat circular light incident surface and each lens has a substantially convex, spherical section light emergent surface. The rib structure is made of the same material as the lenses and may be integrally formed with the lenses to form the network grid. The rib structure is constructed to cooperate with the lenses to which prevent light at angles outside a pre-established range arrives on the light incident side surfaces from exiting from the light emergent surfaces of said lenses.

A lighting unit comprising a lamp and a reflector provides high intensity, high efficiency, even illumination over an area of particular shape and size and has a cut-off angle which enables a person to approach close to the lighting unit without seeing the lamp or its reflection. The reflector comprises at least two spaced apart curved reflector surfaces which join each other along an edge line in a plane behind and spaced from the lamp. Points on the curve line of each reflector surface are spaced progressively further away from the lamp than the edge line. Some points on the curve are located on the side of the plane remote from the lamp. The lighting unit, which may employ reflector surfaces in addition to those above mentioned, may be employed in systems wherein it projects light upwardly for downward reflection from a ceiling or projects light downwardly directly onto a work surface. The lighting units located in some systems are so that the reflector opening is near eye level of a standing or sitting person.

An indirect multiple bulb fluorescent light fixture has an elongated rectangular housing with inverted V-shaped reflector members located beneath each of the bulbs and with an additional inverted V-shaped reflector member located between each pair of bulbs in the fixture. All of the interior surfaces of the fixture, including the side walls of the rectangular housing for the fixture, have specular surfaces. The angles of the V-shaped reflector members are selected to cause substantially all of the light emanating from the bulbs to be reflected out of the fixture and to minimize light reflected back into the bulbs for dispersing the light emanating from the fixture uniformly on the ceiling above the fixture without requiring translucent covers or other diffusers. This results in a significantly improved efficiency of the fixture over conventional fixtures which rely upon translucent covers to effect the desired light dispersion.
