摘要: An orthopedic screw system. The screw system comprises an outer member and an inner screw. The outer member has a longitudinal inner channel that defines an interior sidewall and is provided with screw threads on its exterior and interior sidewalls. An inner screw has threads constructed and arranged to engage with those on the interior sidewall, such that the inner screw may be secured within the inner channel. When secured within the inner channel, at least a portion of the length of the inner screw extends beyond the outer member. Methods of installing the orthopedic screw system into osteoporotic or otherwise weakened bone are also disclosed.

摘要: A method for attaching a plate to a bone is described. A guide tool having a through bore and at least one distal locating feature is provided. The distal locating feature of the guide tool is placed into a predetermined relationship with the plate. A fastener is engaged with a distal end of a driver shaft of a fastener driver. The fastener driver has a driver orientation means associated with the driver shaft. The fastener is inserted into the through bore of the guide tool with the fastener driver. The driver orientation means is mated with a guide orientation means located in the through bore of the guide tool. At least a portion of the fastener is inserted through the fastener hole. The fastener is secured into the bone through actuation of the fastener driver. At least one of a fastener travel distance, a fastener insertion orientation, and a fastener insertion pitch is guided through the mating of the driver orientation means and the guide orientation means. The fastener driver is withdrawn from the guide tool. The guide tool is withdrawn from the plate. A system for attaching a plate to a bone is also provided.

摘要: An apparatus (10) for cutting bone includes a shaft member (12) having a central axis (14) and extending between a proximal end portion (16) and a distal end portion (18). The proximal end portion (16) has a first surface (32) adapted to receive repetitive impacts. The distal end portion (18) includes a cutting blade (40) extending in a first plane between a shield section (46) and a guide portion (60). The shield section (46) and the guide section (60) project axially beyond the cutting blade (40) to recess the cutting blade (40) in the distal end portion (18). The shield section (46) includes an inwardly facing shield surface (48) which extends in a second plane that is transverse to the first plane of the cutting blade (40). The apparatus (10) is a form of an osteotome that is particularly useful for certain spine-related surgical procedures.

摘要: The present invention is a minimally invasive surgical method for fusing adjacent vertebrae. A first K-wire is inserted into the spinous process of an upper vertebrae. A second K-wire is inserted into a transverse process of a lower vertebrae. A first fixation block is secured to the first K-wire and a second fixation block is secured to the second K-wire. A rod member extends across the K-wires. A swivel block assembly is secured to achieve a desired angle for a first axis along which a first screw will be implanted into a facet joint. The swivel block assembly is secured at a desired axial position on the rod member. Percutaneous access to the upper vertebrae along the first axis is then obtained via a cannula. A removable screw having a threaded section for implantation across the facet joint and an elongated shank section that is shearable subcutaneously is inserted through the cannula. The threaded section is implanted along the first axis across the facet joint to attach the upper and lower vertebrae. A shearing tool is inserted percutaneously over the shank section and the shank section is sheared off immediately above the lamina.

摘要: An apparatus (10) for attaching a first section (17) of a bone (12) to a second section (18) of the bone. The second section (18) is separated from the first section (17) by a fracture (14). The apparatus (10) comprises a bone screw (20) having a platform (24) and at least two helical spikes (50 and 52) for embedding into at least one of the first and second sections (17 and 18). The helical spikes (50 and 52) project tangentially from the platform (24). The helical spikes (50 and 58) have a tip portion (58) which penetrates into the bone (12) as the platform (24) is rotated. The bone screw (20) has a first condition in which a first portion (58) of the bone screw extends into one of the first and second sections (17 and 18) and a second condition in which a second portion (24) of the bone screw extends into the other of the first and second sections to compress the first and second sections together.

摘要: An apparatus (10) for correcting spinal deformity comprises at least one anchor (20) for implantation into a vertebral body (90). The anchor (20) includes a platform (24) having a first surface (38) for facing the vertebral body (90). The platform (24) includes a tunnel (40) and at least one passage (44) extending through the platform. The passage (44) extends transverse to and intersects the tunnel (40). The anchor (20) includes screw means (50, 52) for embedding into the vertebral body (90). A removable rod (70) extends into the tunnel (40) and has at least one opening (72) for receiving a cable (120) connected with another anchor (20) in another vertebral body (92). The cable (120) is tensioned to cause relative movement between the vertebral bodies (90 and 92) and thereby correct the spinal deformity. Additional cables (150, 170) may be connected to the anchors (20) and tensioned to achieve correction in multiple planes.

摘要: An apparatus for replacing a damaged spinal disc in a spinal column includes an artificial disc. The artificial disc includes a resilient core having a first surface and a second surface, a first retaining member connected to the first surface of the resilient core, and a second retaining member connected to the second surface of the resilient core. The first retaining member has an outer surface engageable with a first vertebra of the spinal column and an inner surface facing the first surface of the resilient core. The second retaining device has an outer surface engageable with a second vertebra of the spinal column and an inner surface facing the second surface of the resilient core. A first mounting member is connectable with the first vertebra and the artificial disc to position the artificial disc between the first and second vertebrae. The first mounting member is engageable with the artificial disc after being connected to the first vertebra to guide movement of the artificial disc into position between the first and second vertebrae.
