    摘要: A cooling system for a data storage assembly having multiple disk drives disposed on a replaceable module. Air is drawn into a housing for the data storage assembly and through a planar array of disk drives, through a set of blowers and across a set of power supplies. Plenums are provided on top of and below the disk drives and the blowers. Air flowing through the array of disk drives only flows across a single layer of disk drives.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting mechanical interaction in a disk drive system which includes one or more rotatable disks, one or more radially movable heads cooperating with the disks for transfer of data there between, and a carriage for supporting the heads, has a waveguide, coupled to the carriage, for conducting acoustic stress waves corresponding to the mechanical interaction. The acoustic stress waves conducted from the carriage are then preamplified and selectively filtered before being fed to a signal processor and waveform analyzer. In such a manner, specific frequencies or ranges of frequencies of interest, each of which correspond to a particular mechanical interaction are analyzed by the waveform analyzer.

    摘要: The present data storage subsystem includes a data stream optimization system that optimizes its data throughput performance for a particular type of data that is stored therein, such as video on demand data. The data stream optimization system manages the retrieval of the stored video data to more efficiently use the cache memory. This is accomplished by creating a data stream entry into a table for each viewer that requests access to a stored video file. The data stream optimization system also records the storage extent of each video file so that the identity of the next successive segment of the video file that is being accessed is known. The data stream optimization system monitors the amount of data stored in the cache memory for each of the data streams and identifies the next of these data streams that requires replenishment. The data stream optimization system then accesses the next segment of this video file to ensure that adequate data is stored in the cache memory for the uninterrupted viewing of this video file.

    摘要: The data storage subsystem is implemented using redundancy groups of data storage modules, at least one module of which comprises a plurality of data storage elements. In this manner, the one dimensional data storage module redundancy group is expanded in another dimension by the use of a plurality of storage elements to implement each of the data storage modules. Enhanced performance is obtained by having more actuators concurrently accessing data. The reconstruction of data due to an equipment failure is therefore localized to a data storage element rather than requiring the replacement of an entire data storage module.
