A feedback control method and system are provided to accurately control the steering assist level in a vehicle steering system. An electric actuator, such as a solenoid, operates a flow control valve that controls the flow of control fluid in a vehicle steering system in relation to driver and vehicle inputs such as vehicle speed and the angular position and velocity of a hand-wheel of the steering system. The flow of the control fluid is utilized by the steering system to provide a power assist steering force. A feedback signal based on the actual measured current of the solenoid is generated after a hardware filter filters the measured current. There is a time lag associated with the filtered feedback signal. A software filter filters an initial control signal which represents the desired steering assist level to maintain a similar time relationship between the feedback signal and the initial control signal. An error signal is generated by comparing the feedback signal and the filtered initial control signal. The initial control signal is then modified by the error signal to obtain a final control signal which compensates for varying system operating conditions.

In vehicles having drive wheel selections, accessed for example through a transfer case, drive wheel settings are used to determine a desired vehicle ride height at which the vehicle is maintained by a vehicle suspension control system. Preferably, both vehicle speed and transfer case setting are combined to determine the desired vehicle ride height. With two wheel drive selected, the desired vehicle ride height is set to a low ride height which provides the most aerodynamic airflow for the vehicle. However, if four wheel drive is selected, the speed is checked to determine the desired vehicle ride height. If four wheel drive (automatic four wheel drive) is selected, low ride height is still selected for speeds in excess of a first defined speed. For speeds at or below the first defined speed, a high ride height approximately 1 inch above the low ride height is set for the desired ride height. If four wheel drive low is selected, typically in contemplation of off-road operation, a higher still ride height or off-road ride height approximately 1 inch above high ride height is set for the desired ride height.

An apparatus calibrates a suspension control module of a vehicle to within a preselected tolerance of a predetermined ride height with reference to the vehicle coordinate system, the vehicle having at least one adjustable suspension unit interposed between the sprung and unsprung vehicle mass. The calibration is adjusted for rigid body cross-talk and for suspension system overshoot and undershoot. The apparatus includes a first device for measuring a first distance corresponding to an actual ride height of a vehicle and for generating a first signal representative thereof and a second device for measuring a second distance between the vehicle sprung and unsprung mass and for generating a second signal thereof. The apparatus also includes a processor operatively associated with the first and second measuring devices for comparing the first and second signals and calculating a deviation between the signals, the processor being operative to generate a third signal corresponding to the deviation and store this deviation in the suspension control module. A centering mechanism on the apparatus centers the vehicle over the first measuring device prior to calibration of the suspension control module.

Method and apparatus for maintaining vehicular ride height in a vehicle having a body, front and rear wheels and an air suspension including front and rear air springs. The method includes sensing vehicle body height relative to the wheels to obtain front and rear vehicle height signals, and sensing vehicle speed to obtain a vehicle speed signal. The method also includes processing the front height signals to obtain a vehicle roll signal that has been compensated for the natural lean of the vehicle, the vehicle roll signal indicating vehicle roll due to steering adjustments by the vehicle operator. The method further includes processing the vehicle speed signal to obtain a vehicle pitch offset signal, indicating vehicle body height change due to longitudinal vehicle acceleration. The method also includes adjusting the height of the vehicle toward a predetermined target ride height based on the vehicle height sensor signals which have been compensated for vehicle roll and pitch.
