    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of making a cemented carbide body.The body is made using conventional powder metallurgical methods such as milling, pressing and sintering. According to the invention, a combined sintering process is used comprising at least a sequence where the batch of bodies in the sintering furnace is heated to a sintering temperature at least above the melting point of the binder phase. The batch of bodies in the sintering furnace is then allowed to cool down to a temperature at least below the melting point of the binder phase and kept there for at least from about 1 but preferably less than about 30 minutes and then heated up again to a sintering temperature at least above the binder phase melting point.The present invention also relates to a cemented carbide body made according to the method.

    Abstract: Coated cemented carbide milling inserts, particularly useful for rough and semifinishing milling of grey cast iron, highly alloyed grey cast iron, compacted graphite iron (CGI) with or without cast skin under dry conditions are described.The inserts are characterised by a WC-Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a W-alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCxNy with columnar grains followed by a wet blasted layer of α-Al2O3.on the rake face and colored top layer on the clearance side.The invention also relates to methods of making and using cutting tool inserts according to the above.

    Abstract: A cemented carbide insert with improved toughness and resistance against plastic deformation containing WC and cubic phases of carbide and/or carbonitride in a binder phase based on Co and/or Ni with a binder phase enriched surface zone is disclosed. The binder phase content in the insert is 3.5-12 weight-%.     Abstract: A cutting tool insert has a cermet body with a Co and/or Ni binder phase and a coating deposited as monolayer or as multiple and/or alternating layers of carbide, nitride or oxide. The coating has a thickness of 21-50 μm, when the inserts have a flat rake face, without or with simple chipbreakers and a Co binder phase, or has a thickness of 10-50 μm, when the inserts have a rake face land with a width of 100-300 μm with an angle of 10-25° to the rake face and a Co and/or Ni binder phase. The cermet body has more than 50 vol. % Ti-based carbonitride and less than 15 wt % and more than 6 wt % Co and/or Ni binder phase and a hardness of >1650 HV3. The disclosure also relates to the use of the coated cutting tool insert for the machining of cast iron work pieces.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a new process for binder phase enrichment. The process combines binder phase enrichment by dissolution of cubic phase with the requirements that cause formation of stratified layers, resulting in a unique structure. The new structure is characterized by, in comparison with the ones previously known, deeper stratified layers and less maximum binder phase enrichment. The possibility of combining dissolution of the cubic phase with formation of stratified layers offers new possibilities to optimize the properties of tungsten carbide based cemented carbides for cutting tools.The new process offers possibilities to combine the two types of gradients. The dissolution of cubic phase moves the zone with maximum amount of stratified binder phase from the surface to a zone close to and below the dissolution front. By controlling the depth of dissolution, the interstitial balance and the cooling rate, a cemented carbide with a unique combination of toughness and plastic deformation resistance can be achieved.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to coated cutting tool inserts particularly useful for heavy roughing turning operations of very large steel components, such as drive shafts for ships and shafts for wind power plants. The inserts are large with an iC, inscribed circle diameter, of greater than or equal to about 19 mm and a thickness of greater than or equal to about 6 mm with a composition of from about 5 to about 10 wt-% Co, from about 5 to about 12 wt-% cubic carbides or carbonitrides of the metals Ti, Ta and/or Nb, and balance WC with a stratified binder phase enriched surface zone from about 15 to about 40 μm thick.
