Abstract:
The present invention is a amorphous saturated hydrocarbon thermoplastic substrate having enhanced adhesion properties, wherein the enhanced adhesion properties are obtained by treating the surface of the amorphous saturated hydrocarbon thermoplastic substrate with an excited gas phase technique, such that a critical surface energy of at least 35 dyne/cm is obtained without the use of acids or other corrosive materials which cause equipment degradation.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to crosslinkable thermoplastic compositions comprising a plurality of crosslinkable moieties, capable of undergoing addition polymerization, incorporated by functionalization of the precursor poly(hydroxy ethers). The poly(hydroxy ethers) comprise recurring moieties derived from aromatic dihydroxy compounds. The crosslinkable polymeric compositions are crosslinked to obtain crosslinked thermoset polymeric compositions of the invention. The polymeric compositions of the inventions can be suitably used either as an active guiding layer, and/or as a NLO active upper and lower cladding layers in an electro-optic device. The polymeric compositions can also be used as non-NLO polymers for the upper and lower cladding layers, prior to orientation by the application of an electric field.
Abstract:
Disclosed are compounds containing substituted pyrazoline which exhibit nonlinear optical activity on orientation and to oriented polymeric compositions comprising moieties derived therefrom in the backbone of the polymer. Also disclosed are the processes for making the oriented polymeric composition of the invention.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses oriented optical epoxy compositions comprising a reaction product of arylhydrazones with a monomer copolymerizable therewith and to oriented crosslinked polymeric composition comprising the reaction product of an epoxy arylhydrazone or the epoxy composition of the invention with a curing agent. The present invention also discloses processes for making the said compositions.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to nonlinear optical materials comprising aminoaryl hydrazones and to nonlinear optical polymeric compositions containing recurring covalently bonded moieties derived from the aminoaryl hydrazones of the invention. The polymeric compositions of the present invention have high glass transition temperatures and exhibit stable nonlinear optical activity at high temperatures over a period of time.
Abstract:
A battery electrolyte solution contains from 0.01 to 80% by weight of an aromatic phosphorus compound. The aromatic phosphorus compound provides increased thermal stability for the electrolyte, helping to reduce thermal degradation, thermal runaway reactions and the possibility of burning. The aromatic phosphorus compound has little adverse impact on the electrical properties of the battery, and in some cases actually improves battery performance.
Abstract:
The present invention is a liquid crystal display device comprising a color filter which comprises: a) a transparent substrate; b) an opaque material disposed as a pattern on a major surface of the substrate, which pattern defines borders within which a coloring agent or agents can be received; c) a silicate layer superposing the opaque material, the silicate layer having reactive sites; d) a sufficient concentration of organosiloxane groups bonded to the reactive sites of the silicate layer to render the opaque material dispersion inhibiting; and e) at least one coloring agent disposed within the borders defined by the opaque material. In another aspect, the present invention is a method of preparing a color filter for a liquid crystal display device that comprises organosiloxane groups bonded to the surface of a black material disposed on a transparent substrate in such a manner as to form borders for wells or channels adapted to receive coloring materials, the bonded organosiloxane groups being prepared by the steps of: a) exposing the black material to a silicon tetrahalide and sufficient water to form a silicate layer on the opaque material; b) contacting the silicate layer with an organosiloxating reagent to form organosiloxane groups bonded to the silicate layer; and c) disposing a coloring agent into at least one well or channel. The present invention provides an effective means of creating dispersion-preventing patterns for color filters in LCDs.
Abstract:
A process for making PBZ fibers of ultra-high physical properties is given. Polybenzoxazole fibers made by the process of this invention have tensile strengths nearly double in value from what has been reported previously.
Abstract:
An article and method for its perparation is disclosed wherein the article comprises a substrate having at least one planar surface on which is disposed a thermally decomposable metallo-organic compound in active association with a photosensitive dye. The article can be easily processed with, for example, a source of energy such as a laser beam to encode information or produce electroconductive lines.
