摘要: A method for total replacement of an affected intervertebral disc through a dorsal approach comprising the steps of removing the disc material of the affected intervertebral disc (3) and inserting an intervertebral prosthesis (30) into the intervertebral disc space via an extraforaminal path (23). An intervertebral prosthesis (100), in particular an intervertebral disk prosthesis comprising A) a first prosthetic component (101) having a first apposition surface (107) disposed transversely to the central axis (103) B) a second prosthetic component (102) having a second apposition surface (108) disposed transversely to the central axis (103); whereby C) said first and second prosthetic components (101;102) are connected by means of an articulation (106); whereby D) when viewed parallel to said central axis (103) said first and second prosthetic components (101;102) have an elongated shape with a major axis (127) and a transverse minor axis (128); E) said central axis (103), major axis (127) and transverse minor axis (128) intersecting each other and said central axis (103) and transverse minor axis (128) defining a middle plane (126); F) said first and second prosthetic component (101;102) have a cross-sectional area orthogonal to said central axis (103) which is essentially oval or elliptical; whereby G) said cross-sectional area comprises at least two concavities (125;130) lying on different sides of said middle plane (126) and on the same side of said major axis (127).

摘要: A fusion cage for vertebral body fusion is conically-shaped. A thread is formed as part of the external conical surface of the fusion cage. Apertures are defined through the fusion cage in order to provide for contact between the engaged vertebral bone structures and bone growth inducing substances packed within the fusion cage. The fusion cage is introduced and maintains or increases the lordosis between adjacent vertebral bone structures.

摘要: A spine retractor and distractor device comprises spinal process clamps and a retractor assembly, which may be rotatably coupled with the spinal process clamps. The retractor assembly may include a retractor ring, or frame, and a plurality of retractor blades adjustably coupled to the frame, e.g., by clamps. The spinal process clamps can maintain a grip on the spinal processes of the patient, and distraction pliers may be used to impart a distraction force on the spinal process clamps to distract the spinal segments. Additionally, other components, features, or tools, e.g., a light source and/or a camera, can be mounted on the instrument.

摘要: A facet interference screw (10) for insertion between the facet joints of adjacent superior and inferior vertebrae includes an externally threaded shaft portion and a head. The facet interference screw is preferably split into first (20) and second (30) components, each including an outer, semicircular externally threaded surface (22, 32) so that when coupled together the semicircular externally threaded surfaces form the externally threaded shaft portion. The inner surfaces (24, 34) of the first and second components may include curved contacting surfaces so that when inserted, the first component is movable with respect to the second component. Alternatively, the screw may include a damping component (60a′) between the inner surfaces of the first and second components to facilitate damping of the first and second components with respect to one another. The damping component preferably also facilitates articulated motion of the first and second components.

摘要: A method of promoting fusion of adjacent vertebral bodies include providing a conically-shaped cage body having bone engaging projections on an outer surface thereof, the cage body including a leading end having a first diameter and a trailing end having a second diameter that is larger than the first diameter. The method also includes positioning the leading end of the cage body adjacent an intervertebral disc space between an upper vertebral body and a lower vertebral body, whereby the upper and lower vertebral bodies have opposing end faces that define upper and lower limits of the intervertebral disc space. While urging the leading end of the cage body into the intervertebral disc space, the cage body is turned so that the bone engaging projections bite into the opposing end faces of the upper and lower vertebral bodies for anchoring the cage body to the upper and lower vertebral bodies.
