    Abstract: Apparatus for filling a vehicle tire with a reactive liquid elastomer which when cured results in a flat-free tire. The apparatus provides for pre-filling the tire with air of desired pressure to properly set the tire bead on its rim and to maintain such tire pressure during the liquid filling operation. The apparatus enables removal of residual air within the tire as the tire is being filled with liquid and also indicates when the tire is completely filled with such liquid.

    Abstract: A monolithic non-pneumatic urethane tire for use on a wheel rim of the type having a pair of laterally spaced bead flanges formed with wheel rim side walls which extend upwardly from the bottom of the wheel rim is improved by providing a tire body with certain structural features and locating a tubular insert inside the tire body. The tire body has a circumferentially extending tunnel on its inside and includes side walls which converge outwardly to a thickened portion. The thickened portion forms a bead shoulder that seats on top of the bead flanges of the wheel rim and also includes a bead which extends downwardly into the wheel rim adjacent the side walls of the wheel rim. The tubular insert is a semiresilient hollow tube mounted within the tunnel of the tire body to maintain the bead portion of the tire body against the side walls of the wheel rim. The tube is resilient against deflection along a line passing through both of the beads but is capable of being distorted along a line passing through the tire body toward the center of the wheel rim.

    Abstract: Heat stabilization of polyurethane elastomer catalyzed with organo-metallic catalyst is accomplished by adding a minor amount of elemental sulfur or sulfur-donor material to the liquid mixture of polyol and organic polyisocyanate at the time the catalyst is added. The sulfur remains inert during the polymerization reaction, and as long as the temperature of the cured elastomer does not exceed about 200.degree. F. When the temperature of the urethane exceeds 200.degree. F, the sulfur reacts with the catalyst to form a metallic sulfide, which results in the complete neutralization, or deactivation of the catalyst. Elimination of the organo-metallic catalyst prevents depolymerization of the urethane, and the urethane therefore remains solid at high temperatures for much longer periods of time than has heretofore been possible. The amount of sulfur required to deactivate will depend upon the metal content of the organo-metallic catalyst.

    Abstract: A deflation-proof penumatic tire comprises a casing and a substantially void-free, preferably oil-containing elastomeric filling material. The tire casing is injected with a combination comprising a polyol, an organic polyisocyanate and water, in amounts and under conditions sufficient to produce carbon dioxide and form a polyurea-containing polyurethane elastomer in which the carbon dioxide is dissolved in the elastomer, thereby providing a substantially void-free filling material. The formulation permits the addition of a substantial amount of extender oil while retaining an acceptable level of hardness.

    Abstract: A method and composition are provided for preparing elastomeric polymers containing a particulate rubber filler which are useful to provide relatively thick membranes for flooring, decking, roofing or other purposes and which permit the molding of a wide variety of rubber-like goods. The composition comprises a polyol, an organic polyisocyanate, an alkaline carbon dioxide absorbent and a water carrier in amounts sufficient to form a non-foaming pourable, trowelable or sprayable composition, includes rubber particles to provide increased resiliency, economy and density, and cures internally to provide a polyurethane elastomer coating. A prepolymer may be prepared as a separate component having an extended shelf life and adapted for ultimate combination with an aqueous rubber slurry in order to facilitate simple on site mixing of the composition.

    Abstract: A solid, monolithic bicycle tire made of urethane rubber with a cured hardness of from 50 to 95 Durometer A. The tire is formed with a pair of laterally spaced bead shoulders that seat on the bead seats of the wheel rim, and has a circumferential, arch-shaped tunnel formed in the inner side of the tire between the bead shoulders. The tunnel co-operates with the channel in the bottom of the wheel rim to form an annular void, or air space, that allows the tire to collapse locally under excessive impact loads, and at the same time provides a space into which the solid urethane elastomer can be displaced under compression. Under normal riding conditions, most of the light shock loads experienced when riding on a relatively smooth road surface are absorbed by the resiliency of the urethane rubber, with only a minor amount of deflection of the arched tunnel. A severe impact causes the tunnel to collapse to a greater extent, thereby absorbing the shock load and preventing damage to the wheel rim. The tire is cast in a mold, using liquid urethane resin catalyzed to cure in 3 to 5 minutes at room temperatures (i.e., 80.degree. to 100.degree. F).

    Abstract: A flowable material for pavement repair and maintenance comprises rounded sand coated with a polymer surfactant to be non absorbent of water in the presence of a polymer mix which allows time for easy placement of the mix into damaged pavement. The polymer surfactant coating creates a strong affinity between the sand and the polymer mix. The materials are chosen preferably to cause an isoviscous reaction to occur. This type of reaction is characterized by a setting phase which stabilizes the repair before a rapid change in viscosity occurs and may be further enabled by an excess of polymer to increase flowability. An excess of polymer insures that sufficient binder remains at the upper portions of the repair to provide flexible and waterproof structure while excess fluid components settle to the bottom of the repair before setting occurs to seal the surrounding pavement. The slow buildup of viscosity allows the sand to settle so that the mix becomes self-compacting.

    Abstract: A composition and method for use in the repair of a roadway are described. A lower molecular weight hydroxyl terminated polyether polyol is reacted with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of solvents having a specific gravity in excess of 1, and catalyzed by organic mercury and organic lead catalysts in amounts sufficient to cause the composition to gel in about thirty seconds. The reaction products are pumped or poured over an aggregate and allowed to percolate therethrough to form a flush roadway repair.
