Abstract: Described herein is a polymerized biorenewable, previously modified, or functionalized oil, comprising a polymeric distribution having about 2 to about 80 wt % oligomer content, a polydispersity index ranging from about 1.30 to about 2.20, and sulfur content ranging from 0.001 wt % to about 8 wt %. Methods of manufacturing the polymerized oil as well as its incorporation into asphalt paving, roofing, and coating applications are also described.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved heated hose for use with asphalt pavement repair machines that includes a flexible exterior cylindrical insulated hose portion with an inner cylindrical surface defining an inner cylindrical region, and a flexible metal sheath deployed coaxially in this region having an exterior surface, the surfaces defining an area through which hot asphalt flows. A heating element may be removably deployed inside and along the length of the coaxial metal sheath. Hot asphalt flowing through the hose between the inner cylindrical surface of the hose and the exterior surface of the coaxial metal sheath is kept hot by the conduction of heat from the heating element inside the flexible metal sheath. One end of the heating element extends to a far end of the inside of the sheath, and the other end of the heating element is accessible from outside of the near end of the hose, making it possible to easily remove and replace the heating element in the event of a failure. A novel connecting block is provided where the hose connects to the heating machine providing a passageway for the sheath that allows for removal and replacement of the heating element, while also providing a passageway that allows hot asphalt to enter into the hose around the sheath.

Abstract: An apparatus for heating asphalt is used with a container storing a gaseous fuel under pressure. The apparatus includes one or more heaters, each of which includes an elongate infrared emitter, an elongate burner tube, and a Venturi tube. The infrared emitter includes an elongate emitter surface for emitting infrared radiation at the material when the infrared emitter is heated. The burner tube is coupled to the infrared emitter, and defines a burner tube interior for distributing an air-fuel mixture to a plurality of burner tube apertures for distributing the air-fuel mixture over a burner tube outer surface disposed opposite to and spaced apart from the infrared emitter. The Venturi tube is for mixing the fuel from the container with air to create the air-fuel mixture, and supplying the air-fuel mixture to the burner tube interior.

Abstract: Methods, compositions and systems for prolonging the lives of transportation surfaces, including pavement, runways, bridges and parking structures include physically altering the transportation surface and chemically protecting the transportation surfaces. Physical alteration of a transportation surface may include physically altering one or both of a microtexture and a macrotexture of the transportation surface. Chemical protection of a transportation surface may include hardening and/or densifying the transportation surface. The transportation surface may be chemically protected while physically altering the transportation surface or after the transportation surface has been physically altered.
