    摘要: The present invention provides methods of forming and detecting non-visible marks and articles marked in accordance with the methods. In accordance with the methods of the invention, a marking material is applied to a substrate to form a mark that is contrastable from the substrate in one or more regions of the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The mark is covered with a film, which can be a bonded coating or a non-bonded covering sheet, that comprises an amount of one or more inorganic pigments such that the film appears opaque in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum but is sufficiently transmissive in one or more regions of the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to facilitate the detection of the mark covered by the film. The non-visible marks can be applied to articles such as automobile parts, aircraft parts and other articles of manufacture to deter counterfeiting.

    摘要: A new and useful a plastic article, particularly plastic siding, with an accent color pattern incorporated therein, a specially formed accent color pellet which is useful in manufacturing such an article, and a process for producing the article using the pellets are provided. The process contemplates extruding a plastic product from a base material formed of powder-sized particles and specially formed accent color pellets. The accent color pellets are alloyed masses of resins and pigment which are larger than the powder particles of the base material, and have a higher vicat softening point temperature than the base material. The alloyed pellets are designed to melt controllably and to mix controllably with the base material. During the extrusion process, the accent color pellets begin to soften and disperse later than the base material, and cause controllable dispersion of the accent color into the base material, thereby producing accent color streaks in the resulting product having controllable characteristics. The process is particularly suited for producing a simulated wood-grain or streaking effect in plastic siding, and as described can produce hard streaking, soft streaking, and a mottled or variegated streaking in which more than one accent color is used simultaneously. A novel formulation for the accent color pellets is disclosed, in which poly-.alpha.-methylstyrene is used as the only high vicat softening temperature resin.

    摘要: A method for obtaining both light and dark laser marks on a colored plastic article by using a composition with (i) a thermoplastic resin that foams when heated, (ii) about 0.4% to 0.7% by weight of a mica based laser energy absorbing additive and (iii) a coloring agent with one or more colorants selected from the group of pigments, dyes, and mixtures of pigments and dyes. Using a laser at certain settings results in charring of the resin to produce dark laser marks. At other selected laser settings, the resin foams to produce a light mark on a colored background. By varying the laser energy settings, various degrees of both foaming and charring can be achieved on a single plastic article, having a single resin composition, resulting in a multicolored laser image produced by various shades of light and/or dark marks against the background color.

    摘要: The present invention provides a light reflecting polymeric composition that includes at least one halogenated-flame-retardant-additive-free polymer having dispersed therein a pigment package including a combination of Sb2O3 and TiO2. The Sb2O3 and TiO2 preferably have an average particle size within the range of from about 0.05 μm to about 1.0 μm, and more preferably about 0.2 μm. When used in combination, the Sb2O3 and TiO2 pigments synergistically interact together to provide a polymeric composition exhibiting a reflectivity that is substantially higher than can be obtained by the use of either of the pigments alone.
