Cathodically depositable paint binders based on epoxy resin/amine adducts modified with diamine bridges which carry longer-chained substituents are described. The diamine bridges are the reaction products of diprimary amines and mono- and diepoxy compounds. The modified epoxy resin/amine adducts have low viscosities and low glass transition temperatures in spite of their high molecular weights. The stoved films, even with higher film thickness, have flawless surfaces and excellent mechanical properties.

Cationic paint binders based on the reaction products of epoxide compounds with substituted carbamic acid derivatives and the use thereof in the formulation of cathodically deposited paints are described. The carbamic acid derivatives are urethanes, ureas, allophanates, and biuret compounds. Crosslinking functionality and/or protonatable groups are introduced by a suitable selection of blocking agents for the isocyanate compounds utilized. The reaction between the epoxide compounds and carbamic acid derivatives takes place in the presence of basic groups under relatively mild conditions; and, even when several carbamic acid moieties are present in a molecule, a readily soluble product is obtained.

Cathodically depositable electrodeposition paints contain binder combinations of cationic film-forming resins with organic titanium compounds which are obtained by reacting tetraalkyl orthotitanates or titanium acetyl acetonates with compounds containing at least one phenolic hydroxyl group. The stoved paint films exhibit an excellent anticorrosion effect on non-pretreated sheet steel.

Cationic synthetic resin binders free of epoxy groups for the formulation of electrodeposition paints are described. The binders are the reaction product of an epoxy resin carrying at least two epoxy groups and having an epoxy equivalent of 190 to 1000, with from 0.1 to 1.0 amino groups per available epoxy group of a secondary amine carrying carboxylic acid amide groups. Upon being crosslinked on stoving with a suitable hardening component, the binders have improved water dilutability, permitting a reduction of the degree of neutralization necessary for electrodeposition application and improved intercoat adhesion to addition coats. These improved characteristics are significant with respect to an increase of current yield and in adhering additional coatings of a paint system.

A process for the production of a CED (cathodic electrodeposition) coating with improved adhesion towards subsequent layers by cathodic electrodeposition of a coating layer of a CED coating composition onto an electrically conductive substrate and thermal curing by baking in an indirectly heated circulating air oven operated with a proportion of fresh air in the circulating air of the oven of 0 to 20 vol. %, wherein the CED coating composition used contains at least one water-soluble metal nitrate corresponding to a quantity of 1 to 10 mmol of nitrate per 100 g of resin solids content, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of metals of atomic numbers 20 to 83, with the exception of chromium, arsenic, rubidium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, cadmium, antimony, caesium, osmium, iridium, platinum, mercury, thallium and lead, and wherein at most 50 area-% of the CED-coated substrate surface are rinsed with water prior to thermal curing.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a multi-layer coating film on an electrically conductive substrate, comprising the steps of electrodepositing on an electrically conductive substrate, a first coating composition to form an uncured electrodeposition coating film, applying an aqueous primer-surfacer coating composition to form an uncured intermediate coating film, and then simultaneously heating the substrate coated with the said coating films and curing both the uncured electrodeposition coating film and the uncured intermediate coating film to form a cured film, wherein the curing agent B is a capped isocyanate where the capping agents are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic linear or branched diols, hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylates and >NH functional heterocyclic aliphatic or aromatic compounds, to coating films made by this process, and to substrates covered with such coating films.
