Disclosed is an integrated antenna array comprising a plurality of interleaved sub-arrays separately controllable and responding to either the same or separate frequency bands. Both arrays operate with substantially the same phase center and substantially within the same effective aperture. The first sub-array of array comprises of spaced linear radiating elements such as dipoles, log-periodic, Yagi, slotted-waveguide, patch, or array consisting of the same or different elements as used in the first sub-array, either on the same or an entirely different frequency band. Independent beam shaping systems are shown for independent operation of the two arrays.

A communication network is dynamically optimized using network operation metrics, such as may be acquired from a network controller such as a mobile switching center, to achieve network performance goals. Operational parameter adjustments, associated with a particular network resource and corresponding network resources, are preferably determined as a function of the network operation metrics. Implementation of the parameter adjustments are modeled to determine if further or different operational parameter adjustments should be determined. Preferably, actual implementation of the parameter adjustments is effected in part through providing the adjusted parameters to the network controller. Additionally or alternatively, the adjusted parameters may be provided directly to one or more network resources for implementation.

Preferred embodiments use passive antenna feed networks, preferably configured as personality modules, which are adapted for corresponding topological and morphological features. Preferred embodiment feed networks may be coupled to linear or curvilinear antenna arrays to provide antenna beams having a desired contour. Using the disclosed systems and methods path loss variance is minimized for improved system capacity and/or signal quality. Moreover, the disclosed systems and methods provide for reduced average transmission power levels further allowing increased capacity and/or signal quality.

A system and method are disclosed for improving trunking efficiency of a sectored cell by providing overlapping sectors. The disclosed invention teaches the use of multiple narrow beams composited to form a radiation pattern. Signals associated with each such narrow beam may be provided to inputs of a base station signal quality measuring device for assigning a mobile to a particular sector during call origination which inputs are associated with a particular sector of the radiation pattern. The number of narrow beam signals provided inputs associated with a particular sector defines the azimuthal width of that sector. By providing a same antenna beam signal to multiple sector inputs, overlapping sectors are defined.

The invention discloses a system and method which quantifies the traffic or load on a particular sector of a mobile communication cell site. The traffic quantification or load metric is preferably used to compare the load of each of the cell site's sectors. When the difference between load among the sectors reaches a certain level, the preferred embodiment of the present invention causes the sectorization of the site to change in order to alleviate or equalize the traffic load of the sectors. The system of the present invention continues to monitor the cell site for traffic conditions and for changes in the load responsive to the sectorization changes made in order to dynamically respond to the changing traffic conditions on the cell site.

Disclosed are systems and methods which apply design criteria to beam forming network parameters to arrive at a passive beam forming network design. Preferably a beam forming network approach is implemented in two primary stages. Operation of the aforementioned first primary stage may provide a branching configuration which determines how the weights of a desired radiation pattern weight set are allocated in the beam forming network. Preferably, branching nodes are configured to substantially equally distribute power splitting/combining the branches of a node. The aforementioned second primary stage operates to determine the actual physical layout of the various components. Preferably, each branching node is analyzed to determine an optimal physical layout configuration with respect thereto.
