In a battery-driven portable computer, a battery pack is constituted by m battery sets connected in series each including n lithium-ion secondary battery cells connected in parallel. A voltage monitor for monitoring the voltage of the terminal electrode of each battery set and a charger for independently appropriately charging each battery set in accordance with a monitor result are arranged, thereby realizing battery driving by a lithium-ion secondary battery pack having a large capacity. A computer system monitors the voltages of the battery cells which are part of a secondary battery by comparing the battery voltages with a predetermined voltage value in order to detect overdischarge (undervoltage) or overcharge (overvoltage), outputs this information outside of the battery pack, and terminates processing prior to a circuit disconnect.

In a computer system, when an expansion unit is connected to a computer main body by an interface card, power supply control and I/O port selection are performed at the start of the computer system. In the power supply control, when an expansion power supply of the expansion unit is turned on, a first voltage is supplied to a main power supply of the computer main body. When the main power supply is turned on, main voltages are supplied to computer main body elements from the main power supply in response to the main voltage, and a second voltage is supplied to the expansion power supply through the interface. In response to the second voltage, expansion voltages is supplied to expansion unit elements, and an interface voltage is supplied to the interface. After the power supply control is completed, the I/O port selection is performed. The port addresses of the I/O ports in the computer main body are compared with the port addresses of the I/O ports in the expansion unit. If both port addresses coincide with each other, the I/O ports in the computer main body are disabled, and the I/O ports in the expansion unit are enabled.

In the present invention, input data are extracted by a clock and compared with the previous input data. A cyclic counter is provided for cyclically counting clock signals in each noise erasure time period (the maximum retaining time of a signal referred to as noise). When a change is detected in input data, the counter value is stored. When the input data indicate no changes, the counter value and the stored counter value are compared. If a non-coincident result is outputted, it indicates that the noise erasure time has not passed since the input data indicated a change. Therefore, the input data are not outputted. If a coincident result is outputted, it indicates that the cyclic counter counted one cycle. That is, the noise erasure time has passed. Therefore, the input data are outputted since the input data are not recognized as noise.

A message division communication method and system are disclosed for a communication system comprising a host, an intermediate device connected to the host through a high-speed bus and a remote device connected to the intermediate device or the host through a low-speed bus. A message is transmitted in such a manner that the host designates and notifies the remote device of a maximum message length determined in a way corresponding to the transmission rate of the low-speed bus and divides the message into division messages each not exceeding the maximum message length thereby to transmit and receive the division messages between the host and the remote device. Even with a communication system in which low-speed and high-speed buses coexist, a message can be transmitted and received by a common communication control scheme.
