    摘要: A device and associated method are disclosed for interfacing an ion trap to a pulsed mass analyzer (such as a time-of-flight analyzer) in a mass spectrometer. The device includes a plurality of separate confinement cells and structures for directing ions into a selected one of the confinement cells. Ions are ejected from the ion trap in a series of temporally successive ion packets. Each ion packet (which may consist of ions of like mass-to-charge ratio), is received by the ion interface device, fragmented to form product ions, and then stored and cooled in the selected confinement cell. Storage and cooling of the ion packet occurs concurrently with the receipt and storage of at least one later-ejected ion packet. After a predetermined cooling period, the ion packet is released to the mass analyzer for acquisition of a mass spectrum.

    摘要: A MALDI mass spectrometer includes a radiation source, such as a gas or solid state laser, that emits a beam of radiation (typically in the UV or IR wavelengths) directed along the central axis of a linear ion trap in which analyte ions and matrix cluster ions are confined. The radiation beam has a wavelength that is strongly absorbed by the matrix cluster ions. The absorption of radiation by the matrix cluster ions produces dissociation of the matrix cluster ion into fragments having mass-to-charge ratios that lie below a mass-to-charge ratio range of interest. Thus, chemical noise associated with matrix cluster ions is reduced or eliminated.

A linear ion trap configuration is provided that allows for increased versatility in functions compared to a conventional three-sectioned linear ion trap. In operation, the linear ion trap provides multiple segments, the segments spatially portioning an initial population of ions into at least a first and a second ion population. Each segment is effectively independent and ions corresponding to the first ion population are able to be manipulated independently from ions corresponding to ions corresponding to the second ion population; the ions having been generated by an ion source under the same conditions. The ions can then be expelled from the ion trap.

    摘要: A high field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometer (FAIMS) includes at least two focusing electrodes that are separated one from the other by a gap, which decreases in width along a direction of ion flow. Within the gap is disposed an electrode assembly including a first electrode and a second electrode, approximately flat surfaces of the first and second electrodes facing one another so as to define a space of approximately uniform thicknesses therebetween. During use electrical signals are applied via an electrical contact on at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode, and on each one of the at least two focusing electrodes. The electrical signals are for establishing electrode electric field conditions within the space between the first electrode and the second, for selectively transmitting ions therethrough and for directing the selectively transmitted ions in a direction away from one of the at least two focusing electrodes and toward a central portion of the space.
