Abstract: A recycling cavity such as used in a backlight or similar extended area source includes a front and back reflector, the front reflector being partially transmissive to provide an output illumination area. The recycling cavity also includes a component that provides the cavity with a balance of specular and diffuse characteristics so as to balance cavity efficiency and brightness uniformity over the output area. The component can be characterized by a transport ratio of greater than 15% for a 15 degree incidence angle, and less than 95% for a 45 degree incidence angle.

Abstract: An optical system includes a multilayer optical film configured to block transmission of visible light but allow peaks or bands of certain visible wavelengths to pass through; an object disposed on a first side of the multilayer optical film; and a light source and a light sensor disposed on an opposite second side of, and facing, the multilayer optical film. The object is configured to receive light emitted by the light source through the multilayer optical film. The light sensor is configured to receive light from the multilayer optical film. An optical filter may include the multilayer optical film disposed on a wavelength selective scattering layer and/or on a wavelength selective absorbing layer. The wavelength selective scattering layer may have a near-infrared scattering ratio of less than about 0.9.

Abstract: Wavelength-selective films are visibly apparent under the selective wavelength. Wavelength-selective films typically reflect off axis the selected wavelength and therefore can provide high-contrast against a background when applied in a pattern on a substrate. However, it is difficult to apply unique patterned embedded images from film. Disclosed is a cost-effective method and construction of a patterned wavelength-selective image to a substrate. In the disclosed wavelength-selective image, wavelength-selective film particles are applied to an adhesive pattern to create the wavelength-selective image.

Abstract: Gradient permittivity films are described. In particular, gradient permittivity films that include a first continuous matrix of a first component having a first relative permittivity and a second component disposed within the continuous matrix having a second relative permittivity. The first permittivity is greater than the second permittivity for at least one wavelength between 20 GHz and 300 GHz. Such films may be useful in improving the signal to noise ratio for transmitting and receiving units behind a protective cover.
