1. A METHOD OF SPINNING A SOLUTION CONTAINING POLYMER DISSOLVED IN A SOLVENT THEREFOR, INTO FIBROUS FILAMENTS FROM A SPINNERET, COMPRISING THE STEPS OF EXTRUDING SAID POLYMER SOLUTION FROM SAID SPINNERET, PASSING SAID EXTRUDED POLYMER SOLUTION THROUGH A FIELD OF GASEOUS MEDIUM HELD AT SUBATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, INTO WHICH A PORTION OF SAID SOLVENT IS REMOVED FROM SAID POLYMER SOLUTION, CONTINUOUSLY SUPPLYING GASEOUS MEDIUM TO SAID FIELD AND SIMULTANEOUSLY EXHAUSTING GASEOUS MEDIUM CARRYING SAID SOLVENT THEREFROM AND THEREAFTER PASSING SAID REMAINING POLYMER SOLUTION INTO A LIQUID COAGULATING BATH AND COAGULATING SAID REMAINING SOLUTION TO FORM FILAMENTS, SAID FIELD OF GASEOUS MEDIUM BEIND MAINTAINED AT A PRESSURE LESS THAN THAT OF SAID LIQUID COAGULATING BATH AND WHILE AT LEAST PART OF THE SURFACE OF SAID COAGULATING IS IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH SAID FIELD OF GASEOUS MEDIUM THE LEVEL OF THAT PART OF THE SURFACE OF SAID COAGULATING BATH BEING DEPENE DENT ON THE PRESSURE OF SAID GASEOUS MEDIUM THEREON.

THIS INVENTION IS FOR A SORBENT WHICH COMPRISES AN ACTIVE FILLER AND AN ACTIVE BINDER, THE FILLER COMPRISING A BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE, SUCH AS TELOMIC PLANTS OR ALGAE, AND THE BINDER COMPRISING A WATER-INSOLUBLE HYDROPHILIC POLYMER WHICH PREFERABLY CONTAINS SIDE GROUPS OR SUBSTITUENTS WHICH IMPART DESIRABLE SORPTION PROPERTIES THEREIN WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ACTING AS AN AGGLOMERATING MEANS FOR THE ACTIVE FILLER, THAT IS, THE BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE AND SHAPING OR PELLETIZING OF THE MIXTURE. THE METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SORBENTS INCLUDES MIXING DRIED AND POWDERED BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE WITH A SOLUTION OF THE WATER-INSOLUBLE, HYDROPHILIC POLYMER IN A SOLVENT MISCIBLE WITH WATER, COAGULATING THE MIXTURE IN AN AQUEOUS COAGULATING BATH AND SIMULTANEOUSLY REMOVING THE SOLVENT FROM THE SOLID COAGULATED MIXTURE.

THIS INVENTION IS FOR POROUS HYDROGELS OF PARTLY HYDROLYZED POLYACRYLONITRILE WHICH ARE USEFUL AS SORBENTS AND WHICH ARE MADE BY DISSOLVING OR SWELLING POLYACRYLONITRILE IN CONCENTRATED NITRIC ACID AT TEMPERATURES UNDER 50*C. UNTIL THE DEGREE OF HYDROLYSIS DESIRED IS ATTAINED. THE TEMPERATURE IS THEN INCREASED TO 50*C TO 85*C. UNTIL THE POLYMER IS FOAMED. THE ACID IS THEN REMOVED FROM THE POLYMER BY WASHING. POROPH9ORS MAY BE ADDED TO THE POLYMER ACID MIXTURE PRIOR TO THE FINAL HEATING PHASE.

STRONG, ELASTIC HYDROGELS ARE MADE BY COPOLYMERIZING ACRYLONTRILE OR METHACRYLONITRILE OR MIXTURES THEREOF WITH CO-MONOMERS HAVING HYDROPHILIC SIDE-GROUPS, SUCH AS ACRYLAMIDE, METHACRYLAMIDE, ACRYLIC ACID, METHACRYLIC ACID AND VINYL PYRROLIDONE OR WITH MIXTURES OF SUCH CO-MONOMERS. THE COPOLYMERIZATION IS CARRIED OUT IN PRESECE OF FREE RADICALS AND IN AN INORGANIC SOLVENT WHICH DOES NOT UNDERGO ANY SUBSTANTIAL CHAIN TRANSFER SUCH AS CONCENTERED AQUEOUS ZINC CHLORIDE SOLUTION OR NITRIC ACID.

A method of protecting glass from becoming fogged by water or ice from condensed water vapour of the ambient atmosphere. The glass has applied thereto at least on one surface at least one coating comprising a hydrophilic polymeric salt having one ion covalently bonded and the other free. This coating is conveniently applied upon an intermediate base comprising a hydrophobic polymer which has good adhering properties with the glass surface.

NEW POLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS CONTAINING SILVER AND/OR COPPER, USEFUL E.G. IN MANUFACTURING DIALYSE AND FILTRATION MEMBRANES, ION EXCHANGERS, LIGHT SENSITIVE LAYERS, CATALYSTS AND HYDROPHILIC COATINGS, ARE PREPARED FROM COPOLYMERS OR POLYMER MIXTURES CONTAINING BOTH NITRILE GROUPS AND STRONG ACIDIC GROUPS, BY RINGING THEM IN CONTACT WITH MONOVALENT SILVER OR COPPER IONS OR WITH THEIR MIXTURES. SILVER AND/OR COPPER ARE ATTACHED TO NITRILE GROUPS BY SIDE VALANCES, FORMING THUS COMPLEX COMPOUNDS. THE PROBABLE FORMULAE OF THE COMPLEX SIDEGROUPS ARE: -CN.AG+ OR PERHAPS -CN.AG+.NC- AND -CN.CU+ OR PERHAPS -CN.CU+.CU+.NC-, THE COMPLEX CATIONS FORMING POLYMERIC SALTS WIT STRONG ACIDIC GROUPS OF THE SAME OF AN ADJOINING MACROMOLECULE, TO WHICH ALL SAID NITRILE AND STRONGLY ACIDIC GROUPS ARE ATTACHED AS THEIR SIDE SUBSTITUENTS.
