A combined apparatus for measuring the blood glucose level from an ocular fluid comprises a hand-held fluorescence photometer (D1) for determining the glucose level of the ocular fluid and a device (D2) for the amperometric or photometric determination of the blood glucose level. The fluorescence photometer (D1) comprises: first irradiating means (7,8,10) for providing a pilot beam (1) for irradiation of the eye (3) in order to excite a first fluorescence comprising a first wavelength band; first detecting means (8,9,12,13) for measuring the intensity of the of the pupil fluorescence within the first wavelength band; second irradiating means (17,18,21) for providing a measurement beam (5) for irradiation of the eye in order to excite an ocular sensor (4) to emit a second fluorescence comprising a second wavelength band; second detecting means (18,19,20,22,23,24,25) for measuring the intensity of the second fluorescence within the second wavelength band. The first and second irradiating means are arranged such that the measurement beam irradiates the eye under a predetermined angle (a) between 0° and 90° and at a predetermined distance from the pilot beam.

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of tinted ophthalmic moldings comprising the steps of(a) providing a water soluble polymer precursor having crosslinkable or polymerizable groups;(b) providing a pigment dispersion comprising an inorganic or organic pigment and a dispersing agent;(c) mixing the metal phthalocyanine dye or pigment with the polymer precursor to form a tinted prepolymerization mixture,(d) dispensing the tinted prepolymerization mixture into a mold,(e) applying radiation to the tinted prepolymerization mixture in the mold, thereby crosslinking or polymerizing the polymer precursor and entrapping the dye or pigment within the polymeric network of the resultant ophthalmic molding, and(f) opening the mold so that the ophthalmic molding can be removed from the mold.According to the process, tinted ophthalmic moldings, particularly full-body tinted soft contact lenses having improved properties, are prepared with an improved efficiency.

A method of incorporating radiation-absorbing agents (i.e., dyes) into polymeric materials. A preferred method involves crosslinking or polymerizing a polymerizable or crosslinkable material in the presence of a polymeric dye. A preferred product is a tinted contact lens comprising poly(vinyl alcohol). The methods offer advantages in reduced fabrication cycles, reduced extractables, elimination of post-polymerization activation steps, elimination of post-polymerization extraction steps and reduced scrap and costs associated with lens handling.

The present invention describes novel statistical copolymers and the preparation and possible uses thereof. Copolymers are described that are water-soluble and cross-linkable and that comprise the copolymerisation product of a monomer mixture consisting substantially of a vinyl lactam (a) and at least one further vinyl monomer (b) of a different type selected from the group consisting of hydrophobic, hydrophilic and functional vinyl monomers, wherein the monomers are present in the copolymer in the form of statistically distributed building blocks, and, if a functional vinyl monomer is present as a building block in the copolymer, that building block is, where appropriate, modified with a reactive vinyl monomer (c), the reactive vinyl monomer (c) being linked to a building block of a functional vinyl monomer with retention of its vinylic group and with the formation of a covalent bond.

Efficient and consistent processes for manufacturing moldings, especially ophthalmic lenses such as contact lenses. The processes comprises a series of improvements, including improvements in the areas of conditions for dispensing liquid prepolymer into lens molds, male and female mold mating, reusable molds, mold cleaning, lens separation from molds (demolding), lens handling, and in-line inspection. Cyclic series of processing steps are also disclosed. Additionally, an improved molding tool is disclosed, with the molding tool including a male mold housing and a female mold housing, each of which have disposed therein a plurality of mold halves.

For the fast and rational manufacture of moulded articles, specifically contact lenses, that are partly colored or have regions of different colors, by the casting process, measured amounts of two or more crosslinkable materials of different colors are introduced into the casting mould in the uncrosslinked stated unmixed and, after closing the casting mould, are crosslinked together. By suitably controlling the introduction of the different crosslinkable materials with regard to location and/or time the merging of the colors and the transitions between the colors in the contact lens are influenced in a controlled manner.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of storage-stable hydrogel mouldings, the storage stability of which can be established by controlled hydrolysis. At the same time as the sotrage stability is established, the hydrogel is sterilised in its final packaging, and the salt concentration of the aqueous phase is adjusted preferably to a physiological range.
