摘要: An optical switching device comprising a first layer having a first refractive index and having a first side where a coherent light is to be entered into the first layer and a second side opposite the first side, second and third layers sandwiching the first layer, the second layer having a main surface, and electrodes sandwiching the second and third layers for applying a voltage between the second and third layers, wherein a refractive index of the second layer can be changed from second to third and from third to second refractive indexes by an electro-optical effect using the voltage, the second refractive index being larger than the third refractive index, wherein the coherent light entering the first layer is totally reflected by the second layer when the second layer has the second refractive index, and at least part of the coherent light is transmitted through the second layer toward the outside of the main surface of the second layer when the second layer has the third refractive index.

摘要: A method for driving a phase transition type liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal display panel, fabricated by filling and sealing a phase transition type liquid crystal in a space formed between two substrates including two groups of electrodes thereon respectively and having a driving means applying the voltage between different electrodes, comprises a process of altering the length of the helical pitch by a time by applying the voltage a little higher or lower than the sustaining voltage to the selected picture elements for a short time or a process of altering the length thereof partially in one element by applying a similar voltage in the given portion of each element, so that gradational display with the middle brightness is attained.

摘要: A method of forming a mirror in a waveguide, including the steps of forming a layer constituting a waveguide in a substrate and forming a mirror-finished surface at a boundary between a portion irradiated with radiation and a non-irradiated portion by obliquely irradiating a layer constituting the waveguide with radiation. The waveguide may be composed of a photosensitive material, and either the irradiated area on the non-irradiated area may be removed by solvent. The waveguide may be composed of a refractive index imaging material in which a refractive index distribution is formed by irradiation with radiation or the refractive index may be increased by heating the irradiated portion. The refractive index imaging material may include a catalyzer to assist in increasing the refractive index distribution of the irradiated area.
