Disclosed is an improved process for the production of fatty acid lower alkyl esters according to formula (I) R1CO—OR2 (I) in which R1CO represents a linear or branched acyl moiety having from about 6 to about_22 carbon atoms and 0 to 6 double bonds and wherein R2 is a linear or branched alkyl moiety having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, by transesterification of triglycerides or fatty acid esters using C1-C6 aliphatic alcohols, which includes the steps of (a) providing an aqueous mixture of aliphatic C1-C6 alcohol by fermenting in a first reactor a carbon_source comprising carbohydrates and/or glycerol produce a fermentation broth comprising said aliphatic C1-C6 alcohol, (b) providing in a second reactor a triglyceride and/or an ester of a fatty acid, together with a biocatalyst capable of effecting a transesterification reaction, (c) transferring said aqueous aliphatic C1-C6 alcohol mixture obtained from said first reactor into said_second reactor to provide_a two-phase system, and (d) effecting the transesterification reaction to produce said fatty acid lower alkyl ester and a glycerol- or alcohol-containing aqueous phase. The products thus obtained are particularly useful as components of the fuel known as biodiesel.

Processes for preparing fatty acids are described wherein a C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester is subjected to hydrolysis in the presence of an enzyme to form an organic phase comprising a C4-C12 fatty acid and an aqueous phase comprising methanol, wherein at least a portion of the methanol is continuously removed; and the organic phase is subsequently separated from the aqueous phase, and optionally, where the organic phase further comprises an unhydrolyzed portion of the C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester, the unhydrolyzed portion of the C4-C12 fatty acid methyl ester is separated from the C4-C12 fatty acid.

The application describes a holder for attaching a component with outside dovetail carriages to a bearing surface. A pin-like bolt and, next to it, a ssion spring, which is bent away from the bolt under preloading, are attached in front of the bearing surface as interacting holder components. The cross sections, the lengths and the distance between the bolt and the compression spring are adapted to the inner profile of the dovetail carriage. To attach the component, the dovetail carriage is pressed manually by means of the bolt and the compression spring, until it comes into contact with the bearing surface, and is latched in place. The bolt and the compression spring are pressed into the inner sides of the dovetail carriage on both sides by the preloading of the bent compression spring. Advantageously, the compression spring is additionally preloaded toward the bearing surface. The holder offers precise, tilt-resistant attachment of the component in any three-dimensional position while requiring very little space. Multiple holders having a plurality of holders on a displaceable longitudinal slide or a rotable cylinder are suitable for attaching a plurality of fluorescence filter blocks for optional use in a fluorescence microscope.
