A heating device for heating corrosive vapours includes a casing defining a vapour flow path having an inlet and an outlet. A tubular metallic electric resistance heating element is disposed in the flow path and arranged such that the vapours being heated successively pass in opposite directions along the interior and exterior of the element in flowing from the inlet to the outlet of the casing. To accomodate thermal expansion and contraction, one end of the element is connected to the casing by means of a flexible coupling there being provision to maintain at least a part of the flexible coupling immersed in a body of an electrically non-conductive liquid capable of shielding the coupling from the corrosive vapours during operation of the device. The non-conductive liquid may be maintained in the liquid state by circulation through a heat exchanger. The heating element may be made, for example, of platinum or a platinum alloy and the flexible coupling, for example, of a braid of such a metal or alloy or of tantalum. Preferably the apparatus is used to preheat titanium tetrachloride vapour for use in the manufacture of titanium dioxide by oxidation thereof. Where titanium tetrachloride vapour is to be heated the non-conductive liquid used is preferably titanium tetrachloride liquid.

A polymeric material which is capable of forming high modulus, biaxially orientable structures of a cholesteric mesophase, wherein said polymeric material comprises an optically active monomer which is condensation co-polymerized with at least one p-phenylene containing monomer which is itself capable of forming a polymer exhibiting a nematic mesophase, or which is capable of being copolymerized with a second monomer to form a nematic mesophase, or which is capable of being copolymerized with racemic mixture of said optically active monomers to form a nematic mesophase, wherein the resulting copolymer is characterized by a degree of inflexibility sufficient to form a mesophase and wherein said optically active monomer is present in said polymer after copolymerization in an amount sufficient to impart optical activity to said polymer sufficient to form a cholesteric mesophase.

Polymer blend materials composed of an aromatic polyamide and flexible polyamide wherein the aromatic polyamide molecules are uniformly dispersed in a matrix of the flexible polyamide which are produced by first blending the flexible polyamide and monomer(s) for the aromatic polyamide in a solvent, then next polymerizing the monomer(s) in the presence of a phosphite compound, resulting in a transparent gel product capable of being fabricated into useful shaped articles without causing marked phase separation observed in polymer blend materials obtained by conventional coagulation method. The in situ formed aromatic polyamide is uniformly dispersed in the flexible polyamide matrix even in fabricated forms, giving improved transparency over the starting flexible polyamide and improved resistance toward chemicals such as acids, especially after heat treatment.
