Various chemical, mechanical and electrical treatments are contemplated, but glow discharge treatment is particularly useful. Photographic film supports having one or more layers applied thereto can be treated in this manner before or after annealing so that lubricant present on the treated side does not reduce adhesion of later applied silver halide emulsion layers.

Use of a metallo-organic compound in combination with a glow discharge treatment provides a controlled degree of electrical conductivity and beneficial chemical, physical and optical properties which adapt the electrically-conductive layer for such purposes as providing protection against static or serving as an electrode which takes part in an image-forming process.

A polyester photographic film support having a surface coated with a subbing layer which comprises a mixture of gelatin and a polymer where the gelatin to polymer ratio is less than 97:3 and such that the combination of dry coverage and weight fraction of gelatin in the mixture satisfies the equation: C+1.32.times.Z.gtoreq.0.825, where C is dry coverage in g/m.sup.2 and Z is the weight fraction of gelatin, and the polymer comprises:a) from 1 to 60 weight percent of recurring units derived from a vinyl monomer having a primary amine addition salt component or aminostyrene addition salt component;b) from 0 to 50 weight percent of recurring units derived from a hydrophilic vinyl monomer; andc) from 20 to 98 weight percent of recurring units derived from a hydrophobic nonionic vinyl monomer.

The present invention is a method and apparatus for treating a polyester support such as polyethylene napthalate or polyethylene terephthalate. The treatment is carried out at near atmospheric pressure in a gas of helium and nitrogen or oxygen. The treatment uses anodized aluminum electrodes and an atmospheric glow discharge results when the electrodes are connected to an RF generator and spaced about 2 mm apart. The process and apparatus improve adhesion of subsequently coated emulsions on the polyester support.

The present invention is a method for treating a polyester support such as polyethylene naphthalate or polyethylene terephthalate. The treatment is carried out at near atmospheric pressure in a gas of helium and optionally nitrogen and/or oxygen. The treatment uses anodized aluminum electrodes and an atmospheric glow discharge results when the electrodes are connected to an RF generator and spaced about 2 mm apart. The process and apparatus improve adhesion of subsequently coated emulsions on the polyester support at high speeds and relatively low power by selecting a frequency of 40 kHz to 500 kHz.
