摘要: This invention is directed to an alloy, and a method of producing an alloy, of increased resistance to moisture, comprising a melt mixture of at least one phosphate glass, at least one organic thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer, and an amount of a water soluble stabilizer component which provides a source of metal cations having a valency of 2.sup.+ or higher The amount of the stabilizer component added is that amount effective to improve the alloy's resistance to moisture. Preferably, the alloy is comprised of: (a) 5-80% of the matrix material; (b) 15-90% of the phosphate glass; and, (c) 0.1 to 40% of the stabilizer component. Additionally, the metal cations which are found in the stabilizer component and which form part of the insoluble surface layer are preferably selected from the group consisting of Ba.sup.2+, Mg.sup.2+, Ca.sup.2+, Al.sup.3+, Zn.sup.2+, Sr.sup.+2 and Fe.sup.3+.

摘要: The invention relates to an athermal optical waveguide grating device. The optical waveguide grating device includes a fiber Bragg grating secured and bonded to a supporting substrate member with a low thermal expansion securing glass, such as a copper alumino silicate glass. The inventive devices and method of making the devices include the utilization of intermediate solid insert members between the fiber and a negative thermal expansion substrate.

摘要: This invention is directed to a method for modifying the coloration produced in a silver halide-containing photochromic glass when heat treating the glass at a temperature not exceeding 450.degree. C. under reducing conditions. The method comprises subjecting such a glass having a base composition which contains at least 1% by weight Li.sub.2 O, at least 2% by weight Na.sub.2 O, and at least 6% by weight Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O to an ion exchange reaction, wherein lithium ions, and potassium ions, when the latter are present in the composition, in the glass surface are exchanged with sodium ions from an external source, prior to the reduction heat treatment.

摘要: An ophthalmic filter material having a photopic transmittance (Y.sub.P) higher than the scotopic transmittance (Y.sub.S), the ratio of Y.sub.P :Y.sub.S being in the range of 2.0-4.0, a dominant wavelength within the ranges of 580-605 nm and a color purity of 60-75% whereby colors perceived through the material approximate those of the scene being viewed. A method of producing such a filter material which comprises heating a photochromic glass lens in a reducing atmosphere for a time and at a temperature that is sufficient to impart the recited characteristics to the glass surface and that is equivalent to a flowing hydrogen atmosphere, or immersing a tintable plastic solution in a dye solution for a time sufficient to impart the recited characteristics.

摘要: An optically activated bleaching process effective to permanently modify the color of surface-colored silver halide-containing photochromic glasses produced by thermal reduction treatments is described, wherein the glass is coincidentally exposed, for an effective time interval, to (i) a source of high energy light and (ii) a heat source. The process reduces the relatively strong absorption peaks characteristic of the initially colored glass, resulting in a permanent bleached appearance.

摘要: The instant invention is concerned with a method for producing shades of a tint in a photochromic glass, the hue of which will be essentially permanent even after subjecting the glass to temperatures up to about the strain point of the glass. Silver halide crystals constitute the photochromic agents, the glass contains lead, and the method contemplates exposing such a glass to a gaseous reducing atmosphere at temperatures above the strain point of the glass to cause the reduction of silver ions to metallic silver and the reduction of lead ions to metallic lead which coats or alloys with the metallic silver.
