The subject invention provides novel and efficacious systems and methods for particle, chemical, and/or biocompound sensing. In one embodiment, the system of the invention comprises a sensing device that includes a membrane containing at least one nanochannel that spans all or substantially all of the thickness of the membrane. The nanochannel(s) of the invention can be functionalized to enhance target analyte detection and quantification. In one embodiment, the nanochannel is conically shaped and includes a molecular recognition agent for a target analyte. In certain operations, the sensing systems of the invention quantitatively and qualitatively detect biochemical/biomedical species and biomacromolecules, such as proteins, DNA, cells, spores and viruses, with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity.

The present invention relates to an apparatus having a nanodevice (1) for controlling the flow of charged particles in an electrolyte. Such apparatus comprises an electrolytic bath container (2) divided by a polymeric membrane foil (3) into a first (4) and a second compartment (5), wherein each compartment (4, 5) comprises an electrode (6, 7) connected to a voltage supply (8). Further the apparatus comprises at least one asymmetric pore (9) forming a via hole through said foil (3), wherein said pore (9) provides a narrow opening (10) of a diameter in the range of several nanometers down to about one nanometer on a front side (11) of said foil (3) and a wide opening (12) in the range of several ten nanometers up to several hundred nanometers on a back side (13) of said foil (3). The unit has a single dump body with a sloping, fixed endgate and a longitudinally extending conveyor along the open bottom of the dump body, and the unit is provided with a spreader mechanism at the exit gate from the conveyor to facilitate spreading of salt, sand and other aggregates. The unit is pivotally mounted near its rear end so that it can be lifted by hydraulic cylinders for dumping, spreading aggregate, asphalt, etc. The dump unit can be sized so that the vehicle can navigate narrow streets and alleys and is mounted at a height and with sides of a height to meet the requirements for manual refuse loading.

Narrower conductive strips are provided in a segmented RF shield to reduce the gradient coil power loss attributable to the shield. Narrower conductive strips reduce the eddy current losses experienced by the gradient coil, thereby reducing the power required to operate the gradient coil, especially in high speed imaging where high frequencies up to 10 KHz are used. The conductive strips can be made sufficiently narrow to substantially reduce the gradient coil power loss attributable to the shield. When these strips are made in this manner, a third conductive layer may be placed over a transition region where there is a substantial change in the direction of the conductive strips. In such a transition region, RF current tends to travel in curved paths across the pattern of conductive strips instead of along the lengths of the strips, with resulting decrease in coil quality factor, Q. The third conductive layer provides a lower impedance path for RF currents in the transition region, to reduce RF power loss. An ancillary conductor is connected to the RF shield in such a manner as to be insulated from the shield at the lower frequencies at which the gradient coil operates but capacitively connected at RF frequencies.
