    Abstract: A chiral phosphorus-based ligand, in single enantiomer form, which is capable of complexing a transition metal atom and of acting as a ligand in asymmetric chemical catalysts, which comprises the partial structureR.sup.1 R.sup.2 P--O--C--X--Y--C--O--PR.sup.1 R.sup.2 (I)wherein each of X and Y is C or a heteroatom; the C--X--Y--C chain forms part of a linearly-fused bicyclic structure; and either R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently H or an organic group of up to 20 carbon atoms, including alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, and alkylaryloxy, or PR.sup.1 R.sup.2 is cyclic such that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are covalently linked, optionally with additional substituents.

    Abstract: A LIDAR or other remote sensing apparatus is mounted on a wind turbine to sense one or more wind parameters. An extreme event detector processing signals from the LIDAR to determine whether a given sensed parameter will, when it arrives at the turbine, exceed a predetermined value and represent an extreme event. On detection of an extreme event, the detector outputs an extreme event signal to a controller. The controller controls overrating of the turbine in response to a variety of sensed parameters and selectively operates the turbine at above rated wind speed. On receipt of the extreme event signal the overrating is overridden to prevent damage to turbine components. The controller may be a power plant controller and the override signal may override only over-rating at the turbine which has detected the extreme event, or a plurality of turbines.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a device for detecting mercury in a sample solution, the mercury being contained in the sample solution in cationic form and as an organic compound, by means of a detection device comprising an atomic spectroscope provided with a measuring cell which is suitable for detecting mercury gas, a noble-metal concentrator for concentrating the mercury and a control unit, the mercury being converted into the gas phase and being adapted to be concentrated by means of the noble-metal concentrator. The method according to the present invention is characterized in that the control unit controls the supply of the mercury gas to the measuring cell in such a way that, in addition to the measurement of the concentrated mercury, mercury gas of the same sample, which has not been subjected to the concentration step, is introduced in the measuring cell for the purpose of measurement. A device according to the present invention is characterized in that the supply line has provided therein a controllable valve element, which communicates with the control unit, in such a way that, under the influence of the control unit, the mercury gas of the same sample solution can selectively be introduced from the concentrator or directly from the gas phase area into the measuring cell. A further device according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a second measuring cell which is adapted to have supplied thereto mercury gas directly from the gas phase area under the control of the control unit.
