The preparation of phenol-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde resin-based binders extended with a cyclic urea-formaldehyde prepolymer and to products prepared using the binders. More particularly, the invention relates to a cyclic urea prepolymer comprising urea, formaldehyde, and ammonia or a primary amine which, when added to a phenol-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde based resin, results in a useful binder for the manufacturer numerous articles.

The present invention provides a process and system for the manufacture of wood-based composites that implement feedback adjusted in-line addition of a curing accelerator/catalyst to a thermosetting resin adhesive based on at least one of: present moisture content of the wood substrate being bonded and the temperature of the wood substrate being bonded. The method includes: measuring the flow rate of a flowing stream of resin adhesive; measuring the flow rate of a flowing stream of accelerator/catalyst; mixing the flowing stream of accelerator/catalyst and the flowing stream of resin adhesive to form a mixed catalyzed resin adhesive in a proportion of resin adhesive and accelerator/catalyst determined by said flow rates; applying the mixed catalyzed resin adhesive to the wood substrate in an application area; measuring a present moisture content and a present temperature of the wood substrate prior to applying the mixed catalyzed resin adhesive thereto; varying on a continuous basis, the proportion of the accelerator/catalyst and resin adhesive in the mixed catalyzed resin adhesive in accordance with at least one of the present moisture content and the present temperature and bonding together said wood substrate to form said wood-based composite.

摘要:
A polyurethane foamable composition comprising a brominated diol and three polyols is disclosed. The resulting foam formed by reacting these polyols and a diol with an isocyanate has a flame spread of 25 or less and contains a smaller quantity of halogen compounds than usually contained in polyurethane foamable compositions. This combination of polyols and flame retardant shows improved physical strengths and adhesion to primed tank substrates between temperatures of 100.degree. to 160.degree. F.

A polyol is produced as the reaction product of dibromonepentyl glycol and tetrabromophthalic anhydride with defined alkyoxides. This polyol can be used to produce a insulating foam having flame retardant properties.

A plywood-patching composition is provided based on a non-cellular polyurethane elastomer prepared by reacting a polyether or polyester polyol with a polyisocyanate in the presence of a catalytic amount of a co-catalyst system comprising an organo-bismuth compound, preferably a bismuth salt of a carboxylic acid, and at least one organo-metallic compound, preferably a metal salt of a carboxylic acid, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of zinc, antimony and lithium and wherein the bismuth and metal are present in an effective mole ratio; and process for preparing same. The catalysts utilized are relatively non-toxic, yet they promote rapid polymerization with essentially no foaming for a wide variety of non-cellular polyurethane elastomeric applications, particularly in plywood-patch applications where even small amounts of foaming are deleterious to the properties thereof.
