A system for synthesizing nanostructures using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is provided. The system includes a housing, a porous substrate within the housing, and on a downstream surface of the substrate, a plurality of catalyst particles from which nanostructures can be synthesized upon interaction with a reaction gas moving through the porous substrate. Electrodes may be provided to generate an electric field to support the nanostructures during growth. A method for synthesizing extended length nanostructures is also provided. The nanostructures are useful as heat conductors, heat sinks, windings for electric motors, solenoid, transformers, for making fabric, protective armor, as well as other applications.

A cable having a conducting member made from a nanostructure-based material, and a shielding layer made of nanostructure-based material. The shielding layer can be circumferentially situated about the conducting member so as to enhance conductivity along the conducting member. A coupling mechanism may be situated between the shielding layer and the conducting member so as to secure the shielding layer in its position on the conducting member. A method of making the cable is also disclosed.

A method for manufacturing a carbon composite is provided. The method includes providing a carbon-containing resin material having an appropriate concentration of catalyst particles. Thereafter, the resin material may be extruded through an aperture while being exposed to a high temperature range to permit polymerization of the extruded resin material. A subsequent exposure of the extruded resin material to another elevated temperature range causes carbon in the resin material to couple to the catalyst particles to promote carbon nanotube growth and transformation of the resin material to a reinforced composite material. Reinforced composite materials are also provided.
