    摘要: A SLM-based projection display system (10) samples and processes video data for delivery to a spatial light modulator (SLM) (13c), and uses a color wheel (14a) to color the SLM-generated images. A frame memory (13b) provides data to the SLM (13c) and is managed so that, if the phase of the incoming video signal changes, a desired phase relationship between the color wheel position and the data available to the SLM (13c) can be maintained. Also, a motor control unit (15a) uses a horizontal sync signal to generate a drive signal for the color wheel motor (16a), which limits the transient time during phase-changing events, and which provides a means for adjusting the phase of the drive signal.

One embodiment forms a cardinal array of digital micromirror elements by staggering alternate rows in an array. According to a second embodiment, an ordinal pixel array 57, is converted to a cardinal pixel array, by grouping SLM elements 59, 61, 63, and 65 into a pixel block 58. All of the elements in a pixel block are controlled in unison such that the pixel block acts like a single pixel. Rows of pixel blocks 67 and 69 are offset to provide the effect of a cardinal array of pixels without the decrease in efficiency sometimes associated with cardinal pixel arrays.

    摘要: A spatial light modulator with hexagonal elements or pixels. The elements include a reflective hexagonal surface supported by flexible hinges. The hinges are in turn supported by support posts away from a substrate. On the substrate are control or address electrodes which control the direction of deflection of the reflective surface by selective build up of electrostatic forces. The use of hexagonal pixels allow the posts and electrodes to be arrayed in horizontal lines, thereby allowing reset of horizontal lines of the pixels.

    摘要: A front light guide panel including a plurality of embedded surface features is provided. The front light panel is configured to deliver uniform illumination from an artificial light source disposed at one side of the font light panel to an array of display elements located behind the front light guide while allowing for the option of illumination from ambient lighting transmitted through the light guide panel. The surface embedded surface relief features create air pockets within the light guide panel. Light incident on the side surface of the light guide propagates though the light guide until it strikes an air/light material guide interface at one on the air pockets. The light is then turned by total internal reflection through a large angle such that it exits an output face disposed in front of the array of display elements.
