Copper-diamine complexes such as copper(II)-di-t-butylethylenediamine dibromide are prepared by the reaction of a dihalide such as 1,2-dibromoethane with an amine such as t-butylamine and a basic copper(II) compound such as cupric oxide in a nitrile solvent. The diamine can be liberated from the complex by reacting it with a complexing agent such as an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid salt.

The polymers are prepared by contacting polyfunctional isocyanates with quinone-coupled polyphenylene oxides having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 2.0 or less. The polymers either alone or in combination with other polymers can be formed into useful articles of manufacture by conventional molding, extruding, etc., processing techniques.

Polyacetylenes, either homopolymers or copolymers, are rendered more soluble and/or more thermally stable without destroying their film-forming properties and with minimal decrease in their high carbon content by reacting them with one or more 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiones commonly called tetracyclones. These latter compounds, together with the acetylenic groups of the polymer, undergo a cyclization reaction to produce a 3,4,5,6-tetrasubstituted 1,2-phenylene moiety in the polymer backbone. Because of their high thermal stability these polymers are especially useful as binders for graphite fibers in making graphite composites or to produce films or coatings for high temperature applications.

Novel polymer compositions that comprise high 1,2-enrichment are described herein. Said polymer compositions have up to about 50% by weight of 1,2 units wherein about 25% to about 75% by weight of all 1,2 units are present in the polymer backbone. Additionally a novel process is disclosed for producing polymer compositions by dissolving a polydiene in a monomeric diene during emulsion polymerization conditions.

Disclosed are blends comprising from about 40 to 70 wt. % of a polyetherimide and the remainder one or more polyamides. The blends generally have a tensile strength which is greater than the tensile strength of polyetherimide-polyamide blends which do not contain from about 40 to 70% polyetherimide, while still retaining a good combination of other physical properties such as heat distortion characteristics and impact strength. In addition, the blends of the invention may have a flexural strength which is greater than that of other polyetherimide-polyamide blends which do not contain from about 40 to 70% polyetherimide.
