A magnetic circuit is provided in an enclosure that can efficiently generate magnetic flux from the enclosure, configuring a magnetic disk, to a magnetic disk. Thus, by providing such a magnetic circuit, a magnetic field different from that in other enclosure parts, that is, a local magnetic field, is generated from the magnetic circuit in case the disk device is set in an external magnetic field. Hence, this local magnetic field can effectively erase data in the magnetic disk. In particular, since the local magnetic field is generated even if the external magnetic field is weak, it is possible to not only suppress the demagnetization of permanent magnets used in the spindle motor at minimum, but also effectively erase data in the magnetic disk.

A portable, small magnetic disk drive to be mounted on a portable device operates silently at low power consumption. In one embodiment, a spindle motor is fixed to the bottom wall of a metal base plate formed in the shape of a box by press working. The spindle motor is provided with a fluid dynamic bearing (FDB). A spindle hub is supported on the FDB, and a small magnetic disk having a diameter of about 1.8 in. (45.7 mm) or below is mounted on the spindle hub and is fastened to the spindle hub with a top clamp. The rotating speed of the spindle motor is about 4200 rpm or below. Gram load for pressing a magnetic head toward the magnetic disk is about 0.5 gf or above and less than about 1.0 gf.

An inertial latch mechanism comprises a latch lever rotatable on a pivot from a release position to a latch position, and an inertial lever which is rotatable on a pivot and has a moment of inertia larger than that of the latch lever. The inertial lever rotates counterclockwise when a counterclockwise shock is given to the actuator, and pulls the latch lever at a first latch part by a first latch projection to move the latch lever to the latch position. The inertial lever also rotates clockwise when a clockwise shock is given to the actuator, and pushes the latch lever at a second latch part by a second latch projection to latch the actuator which has bumped against a crash stop and is reversely rotating.

A method and apparatus to provide a retract circuit that can correspond to the tendency toward miniaturization and low supply voltage. When drive supply voltage Vcc is applied, a retract circuit charges a retract condenser Cr with boosted voltage Vup, equal to three times Vcc, generated by a booster circuit. Then, if the drive supply voltage Vcc is cut off and a VCM driver stops, the retract circuit detects power-off with a power OFF sense circuit, and provides retract delay time by a retract delay circuit. Furthermore, when the retract delay time elapses after the drive power supply is turned off, the retract driver switches the switching circuits on, discharges the retract condenser, charged at the boosted voltage, supplies discharge current to a voice coil, and retracts the head assembly.
