Abstract:
Apparatus for forming refractory masses, in situ, at selected surface locations by applying to such location a mixture of fine particles of a substance which is capable of undergoing combustion to produce heat and particles of another substance, the substances being of such composition that such heat will melt at least the surfaces of the particles of the other substance, and creating the conditions for producing such combustion.
Abstract:
A PROCESS FOR PHYSICALLY STRENGTHENING A BODY MADE OF VITREOUS OR PARTLY VITREOUS MATERIAL BY PROVIDING THE BODY WITH SURFACE LAYERS OR COATINGS OF A MATERIAL WHOSE COMPOSITION IS SUCH THAT AT LEAST ONE COATING INGREDIENT CAN UNDERGO A SOLID-TO-SOLID PHASE TRANSFORMATION WHICH GIVES THE COATING A HARDNESS AT LEAST EQUAL TO THAT OF THE BODY, AND CAUSING SUCH PHASE TRANSFORMATION TO TAKE PLACE.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for the controlled diffusion of ions from a gaseous medium into selected surface portions of a body by contacting such portions with a gaseous diffusion substance at least one element of which represents a source of the ions which are diffused into the material, and maintaining such element in an ionized state in the immediate vicinity of such portions for permitting such ions to diffuse into the body surface.
Abstract:
An article which may be in the form of a flat sheet is supported at least partially by a plurality of jets of gas discharged upwardly against the article from discharge orifices while the orifices are moved in directions having horizontal components so that the sheet may be displaced in a horizontal plane. The orifices may be in the walls of cylinders which are then rotated so that the moving jets displace the sheet horizontally. Orifices may also be provided in the upper reach of a belt which passes over slots in a gas discharge chamber which is connected to a source of gas under pressure. Both a method and apparatus are disclosed.
Abstract:
An electrically heatable transparent glazing panel composed of a transparent glass substrate is provided with at least one electrically conductive coating strip by applying onto the substrate a coating composition composed of a suspension or paste incorporating metal particles and intermixed glass particles, at least some of which are of a glass having a softening point lower than that of the glass of the substrate, substantially all of which particles are less than 5 microns in size, and subesquently firing the applied composition. In the composition, the proportion of metal particles is sufficient to render the resulting coating electrically conductive.
Abstract:
In the fabrication of flat glass by drawing a ribbon of glass upwardly from the free surface of a molten glass bath, the uniformity of the glass currents feeding the ribbon is improved by passing an electric current through the glass in the bath between electrodes at different levels of the bath.
Abstract:
A PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR CHEMICALLY TEMPERING A BODY OF A MATERIAL AMENDABLE TO SUCH TREATMENT BY DISPOSING THE BODY IN A NON-LIQUID ENVIRONMENT, AND PROJECTING AGAINST THE BODY A CONTINUOUS SUPPLY OF A LIQUID TEMPERING MEDIUM AT A FLOW RATE SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE A CON-
TINUOUS STREAM OF THE MEDIUM TO FLOW ACROSS THE SURFACES TO BE TEMPERED.
Abstract:
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR APPLYING A SUBSTANCE VAPORIZABLE BY ELECTRON BOMBARDMENT TO A SURFACE TO FORM A COATING THEREON. THE SUBSTANCE IS VAPORIZED IN A VACUUM BY BEING BOMBARDED WITH ELECTRONS. THE VAPOR, THUS FORMED, TRAVELS FROM WHERE IT IS FORMED AND IS DEFLECTED ONTO SUCH SURFACE TO COAT THE SAME.
